Description The second of my "Day Of The Dead" inspired masks. This one is very colorful & very traditional, since marigolds are closely associated with the dead in Mexico (like lillies are with Easter).

The Day Of The Dead (El Dia De Los Muertos) in Mexico is as much a celebration of life and family as it is a time to honor the dead. Popular motifs of flowers and bright colors decorate candy skulls, colorful "calaca" masks are worn by revelers, based on the Mexican belief that no dead soul likes to be thought of sadly, and that death should be a joyous occasion. I created my new skull mask designs in that spirit.

This one features a marigold motif, carved in 8oz leather by hand, deeply tooled, formed without a mold and hand painted in bright colorfast Liquitex acrylics.

I'm probably not making too many of these creepy-colorful masks, so this is a very limited edition design. Signed, dated, numbered original, this is "Marigold Skull #1"

Available right now in my Etsy shop: [link]

My wife says that they're what would happen if the Animaniacs got a hold of Death... with finger paints available. Truly frightening.

That is the cutest little skullmask I've ever seen! I like the colour combination on the other one a bit better - this one is a little too overwhelmingly blue - but the marigold-eye-holes are so adorable!

I think I should have done marigold petal teeth, to lighten it up & add a bit of whimsey. I agree it's awfully blue, especially in the lower face.

True. Our culture has nothing like El Dia De Los Muertos...it's a little wild like Mardi Gras but with reverent spiritual undertones.
