Description Last mask of 2010...a Tribal Dragon Skull. Again, many thanks to for inspiring me with his haunting skull carvings.

Like all my masks, this is hand carved and hand shaped without molds or forms, from one piece of 8oz leather. It's been painted with colorfast Liquitex acrylics in black, brown and white & sealed with an acrylic clearcoat for durability. The tribal designs are tooled in textured relief, as though carved into the "bone".

Signed, dated, numbered original; this is " Tribal Dragon Skull #2". Available exclusively at my online shop: [link]

I love the concept you've used here, and I think I'm much more of a fan of the subtle colours- makes it look as though the dragon was born with those markings inlaid into it's skull.

Ha, I like this version even better. The tribal design looks more organic and natural, almost like it was on the dragon when he was still alive, a natural pattern. This also makes the mask look older, more weather worn, which is very appropriate for a skull.

I absolutely looove your dragons.. and your dragon skulls.. and this, this is perfect... I am in awe of your mad skills.

I wish working leather wasn't so hard on my hands... or maybe i'm just doing it wrong.

Both of them are fantastic, but between the two I think I prefer this one; the way you did the markings on this has a really nice subtlety. Really cool!

Great way to end the year, yeah?

Something about tribal designs and bleached dragon bone just go so well together! I get the sense that some sort of deep magic has etched these runes into ancient bone..and that the dragon is anything but dead! Man I'd love to see someone actually wearing one of these masks! It must be so striking, especially if you black out around your eyes!

Nice piece of work you made here! I think I like this one even better then the one with black markings, because here it is a little more subtile. As always, the colourings are great, and the bone structure looks pretty real. The espression on the "face" is nice too.
Keep up the good work

Best wishes for 2010

I agree with , this one is nicer because the faded look of the carvings looks more realistic, not to mention elegant. The thumbnail really looks like one of those expensive, genuine skulls that I admire.

In my opinion, this deviation here is one of the best from your gallery because it's a fresh look that's different and yet still obviously a part of your style. Things like this inspire me to explore art and not just stick to digital illustrations. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year to you and your dog/s!

I like that this one looks like it lay in the desert for quite some time. ^^ You did a good job with the bone color and structure.

Great weathered look to this one. In the smaller version, this has a very natural look and is good at fooling the eye. Awesome!

This is sick (in a good way!)
I actually made a tribal dragon skull mask for my 3D class last year, but I did like brightly coloured aboriginal designs. And it was made from wire and plaster, not leather haha. But yours is awesome, it's so legit!

Thank you. Tribal designs are fun. This is my first real "tribal" piece but it was a hoot to try...must do a wolf too, soon.

UrnesAshTree [2010-12-31 20:59:34 +0000 UTC]

This mask seems more striking than the first one because the carvings are more subtle and reminiscent of carvings rather than seeming painted on. Also, I love =DonSimpson 's work, and the overall effect of the 'carvings' on this mask seems more directly inspired by his work and maybe closer to what you were going for. Both masks are extremely beautiful, thank you for sharing your talent with us.

Oh and happy New Year!

Whoa... I really like this one. They're both beautiful, as always, but I prefer this one - the faded colouring of the markings makes this one look somehow more menacing and more hauntingly beautiful. Great work!

I agree...the tooling adds texture & realism. The best fantasy art has a touch of reality to it, imo. Thanks!
