Description Better upload this before I start hating it! This ate so many of my precious few braincells. Must have gone through at least 6 compositional changes.

This is Dr Kynes from the Dune books by Frank Herbert... Judge of Change and planetary ecologist of Dune/Arrakis. He dreams of seeing a desert planet flourish with greenery someday.

Was trying to get the Fremen, weather/sun beaten, water wasted look. Y'know desert creature like *grin*... I'm hoping some personality shows?

He's definitely one of my favorite characters, it's a pity there's barely any fan art of him

(Yeah, I'm quite obsessed with these books That's right "oh nooo!" Weird fan art coming your waaay!)

Almost exactly as I imagined him, and you're right, no one ever draws Kynes. Good job!

Ehn. I've always been fond of the Dune series, if you can capture the atmosphere, then I'll put up with all manner of 'weird' fan art.

Such as this. Though I mean its good. Not weird.

This one reminds me of FFXII
the desert background the colours and the hair, good job merriya, I love the fact that you left your drawing there for all to see!!
somehow I think the difficulty which you faced is due to the fact that this one is actually facing towards the light, we tend to give our characters a slightlty darker look and its a bit easier to paint shadows rather than light, atleast for me dont know about you!!
but I like him reminds me of my granma

Thank you again!

Hmm, I dunno, the definition of painting shadows and painting lights is kinda blurred for me, especially if it's digital.

well then I love it anyway, have you read that poem by Yeats, I've forgotten the exact words but he talks of spreading the most beautiful silks underneath his country's feet (or you could say his object affection's but he was a patriotic poet) made of the lights, the halflights and the darks lights but I remember the last verse "but I being poor have only my dreams........tread softly for you tread on my dreams"

Gorgeous! Weather bean? i dont know; Sunkissed hair? definitely! And intense concentrated lok, All the way! I looove this piece! I admire you are bold enough to incorporate the sketchiness as part of the final piece! it looks good, the beard, especialy and the crow's legs, wrinkles are awesome!!

I'm missing the sketchiness in his cloak a lil... but overall, i think i just have this thing for old bearded distinuised gentlemen! heheh

Thank you

Ah yes, I like leaving some traces of the traditional art (in this case the ballpoint sketch). I feel the same way about the cloak, I never sketched it out (just the face), I think I'll try imitating the sketchy lines digitally, it should be a more scruffy looking too (first I need to get un-lazy, this weather isn't helping XD).

i just have this thing for old bearded distinuished gentlemen! I can relate

What is that in the background..buttes? Is he in Utah? I'm onto you now, Writer if Dune. Get out while you can, man! There's about 30 Dune books! You'll be dead by the time you finish!

But anyways, the piercing eyes! The realistic facial rendering!MADNESS!

merriya In reply to MNat [2009-05-09 08:17:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you~~

I'm glad the background actually looks like something (yes they be buttes). Hahaha, Utah... and there's even a character called 'Idaho' in the books!

Frank Hebert's only written the first six of the Dune books, the rest are by his kid and some other fellow. I'm not sure if I'll like them as much. IF I find them in the first place... I was very lucky to accidentally find the first four books in an old bookshop!

I actually had the joy of listening to a Dune-fanboy lecture on the first 6 books. He assured me those were the only good ones. now it makes sense as to why! Original is always best! @,@ I havent read them myself though, but the old Dune movie is...well...not good.@,@ I'm kinda interested in reading them now (I have a fondness for desert-y type places. Deserts! They're just where OCEANS USED TO LIVE! ) but I've unfortunatly been sucked into CJ Cherrryh's Foreigner series. The first book was freakishly slow for the first 200 pages...x.x but now I wanna know what happens...uhg. Sneaky authors!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

merriya In reply to MNat [2009-05-09 10:08:30 +0000 UTC]

Deserts!! You should totally read it! (if the name of the book/planet doesn't say enough XD) I could attempt to brainwash you further, but I put my trust in the Dune-fanboys lecture . *suppresses incoherent fangirl ramblings*

I wasn't instantly in love with it when I started reading it either, it took some time to grow on me? By the time I was halfway through the book I realized I was totally obsessed. I'm loving the sequels too so far.

The old movie was weird, they've thrown in a lot of straaange things. And the casting... everytime I look at Gurney I think CAPTAIN PICARD! Gurney's supposed to be an ugly lump of a man.

Awesome. I always though Kynes was pretty cool, and this looks almost exactly like I imagine him. I like his expression. I think you did really well at getting the Fremen look, too.

Yeah, despite the seemingly minor role... he was awesome! (the books wouldn't have been the same without him )

I'm so glad to know he turned out right! Thank you!

Eowaaaaaa!!! OwO Omigosh! this is Gorgeous *w*

I read Dune quite a while ago, and it took me a bit to remember who he was, But I think I remember thinking that he was cool

I LOOOOOOVE THOSE BLUE EYES!! and you wonderfully achieved the desert look ^________^ He's so ... *Real* looking...^w^

8D I need to read the book again Nao!!

*I may just have to fave this from both my accounts >w< I like it that much XD

Hehehe, I keep going back to the first Dune book just to read the I am a desert creature! part! It's one of my all time favorite book 'scenes' *sighs*. Amazing book, there's little else one can compare to it.

Real looking? Thank you! The eyes, I was a bit worried about the eyes, whether they looked melange addicted or not?

Saimiri [2009-05-08 18:40:43 +0000 UTC]

I've never read Dune so I can't compare to how the character is depicted in the book~

I love his strong gaze, it seems really powerful and determined.
Also, the whole face is just... wonderfully done, I can't really sum it up in a few words. The detail of his beard looks very very realistic, as I said I love the eyes, but the nose as well! Everything actually, that's just the things that I notice mostly

The folds of his cape look so smooth and nice <3

merriya In reply to Saimiri [2009-05-09 07:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess you could call him powerful and determined (in the book version at least). Thank you! I love drawing portraits, and I'm glad to know it turned out well. I'm also glad the folds look okay, I usually have so much trouble with them
