Description Um al Jimal- "Mother of camels" is a huge ruined city In the north of Jordan that dates back Centuries(some buildings are pre-roman). So old that little is known of the people that lived there, or its original name.

The entire city is made out of black volcanic rock, and has such a strange feeling of...what i can describe as loneliness... even with the contrast of the blue cloudless sky above, it sticks out.

The new name comes from the fact that Bedouins would keep there newborn camels there, to protect them from predators, also it was still lived in up until the 1940's for the same reason, so that the local population could protect themselves.

This Shot above is of -what is left of- a byzantine church (one of many in this massive city), that was probably two floors high, with two lines of arches to hold the roof up and a beautiful mosaic floor.

any notes and comment are welcome

I have a film of Poe's The Raven on my MySpace account, as read by Christopher Walken - it's very good

I noticed in this pic as well, on the far left under an arch is the Templar sign carved into the stone...an echo of the past

"never more" I cant help remembering the Simpson's episode with the poem in it

one thing about this city is that the Druze (offshoot of the Ismaili sect of Islam) used to live here for the longest time!

in Umm al Jimal, its filled with the softest soil i have ever seen, almost powder. it was like the ash! very strange, in Al Qastal [link] & [link] if you dig in certain areas and find more mozaics!

And the compositon and the shadows.
Wish I had more of a chance to comment on your photos (the computers in the cyber cafes in Cairo can be rather bad)!

There is something about this photo, I don't know, maybe the perspective or the place itself, which makes it looks really wonderful.
Great

Thank you very much! I think it has something to do with the dark tones of the rock mixed with the blue sky!

Thanks for adding in the background story, it was a very interesting read. This beautiful place seems even more fascinating now. So mysterious and ancient, if only one could see how it was in its original shape. Thanks for sharing!

I was very pleasantly surprised at how big it was, you could actually spend a whole day wondering around the ruins alone !

Wow, really? The photo doesn't really show its actual size then, I didn't realize it was so immense. Thanks for telling, I'll probably google it now
