Description
One of the last standing walls in the abandoned city of Umm al JamalI think I might mentioned this before but the translation for it is "Mother of Camels" or "mother of beauty"
Inhabited by romans from the 1st till the 8th century, it was a major reservoir for desert caravans, up until the year 747AD when it was destroyed by a massive earthquake

What was the building that is shown in this picture, or isn't that known? Is that rubble ever recycled into new buildings, as i know that happened/happens quite a bit? Beautitful picture though

haha no its closed off so that the tourists may enjoy it and that the locals don't steal and vandalize
Jordan is a no bribe country, so i use three methods to get into places im not supposed to
1.Ask nicely- works 20 percent of the time
2.Tell them I'm press (i have done work for magazines but nothing worthy of a press card) works 75 percent of the time
3.ask if they got a call about me coming! works about 50 percent of the time

Act like an ignorant tourist and only speak loud English, it works with me cos I'm white and wear a funny hat, and even when it doesn't work, you get the satisfaction of annoying them and making them speak in broken English!

I love the idea that "mother of camels" and "mother of beauty" would be the same. I suppose camels must be beautiful to those who depend on them!
This is a great shot - strangely, it reminds me of Mow Cop [link] but Mow Cop is a folly, not a genuine ruin.

haha yeah i suppose so! apparently in Dubai if you hit some one with a car you pay around 10,000$ but if you his a camel you have to pay up to 150,000$ to the victim!
