No. He's not a captive. I found him in Los Angeles County last week.

Very nice shot. How was it's temperament? I know racers can be a little nippy.

Thanks, Lara. This one was actually super calm. I caught a 5 foot Sonoran whipsnake in Arizona though that tore me up pretty good.

There has also got to be one that wants to make you bleed! I always end up getting bit by something when I go looking for herps...but it's not always the herps that get me. I seem to be a magnet for bees and wasps too! Good thing I'm not allergic to them!

I herp almost exclusively in shorts, regardless of my surroundings. Arizona tore my legs up. Almost every plant there has a way of stinging, poking, or making you itch. Haha

Oh I always wear jeans...no matter how hot it is. I think mostly b/c I do a lot of my searching for herps by my fire house. If a call goes out we aren't aloud to wear shorts. You can under turn out gear but I'm not gonna wear turn out gear for just an ambulance call...unless it's an MVA. I wear jeans so I can quickly hop on the ambulance.

That makes sense. I just herp super hard and usually cover lots of ground on foot and I overheat easily. haha

I covered over 30 miles on foot in Arizona over the week.

OMG that is a lot of ground! I don't cover half as much...but I think it's partly b/c I do like to just chill in one spot for a while and just enjoy the woods and being out there.

Almost everyone else I herp with does that as well and people give me crap about never wanting to stop. haha.

I can get on a role sometime too...with just looking and keep going like you do. But I still don't think I would be able to cover 30 miles! I give you a lot of credit for that.

Haha thanks. It wasn't 30 miles at once though. haha. It was over the few days of actual hiking. We covered a little over 10 one day though.

I like it because it keeps me in shape. I get really out of shape over winter when all my herping involves salamanders in the redwoods and walking 4 miles on flatground, at most.

So you put on your winter weight...like bear do. Yeah I like the cool months but I have to do stuff inside, like using a stationary bike, so I don't start putting on pounds! Lot easier for a guy tho to loss the extra weight...for a woman we have to work at it a little harder.

Haha. That's it. Winter weight and winter depression from not finding any snakes. This winter's gonna be tough in Arizona because they don't even have the sallies that we have here to keep me occupied.

We have a few nice salamander species in NJ. The largest being the spotted and tiger. There is a guy that specialized in salamander and newt species at the Hamburg, PA show I go to all of the time...it's who I got my axolotl from. He's really got some nice animals...may need to stop by his booth at the next show.

Not to butt in or anything but I have to know what herping is. I've never heard of the term before. Sorry If I interupted.
