Description Masticophis lateralis lateralis - California striped racer -from Los Angeles County, California.

I flipped this adult on my way to Arizona. It's the first I've found in 2 years he was a welcome find.

Thank you. They're a pretty common snake in certain areas of the state.

I used to have one of these, wonderful snake(but then, I'm partial to Masticophis). To this day I do not know what killed that snake. It was perfectly healthy(or so it seemed), eating and pooping like normal, and one morning I found him dead in his cage. I've never seen another offered for sale anywhere. Coachwhips usually live a long time in captivity if provided with a hide-box and plenty of food.

They're great snakes and they have personality. That's a bummer about it dying. It happens though. Coachwhips are fun. I was hoping to find some this trip but we ended up only finding 5 DOR (Dead on Road) which was a total bummer.
