Description This is a Plague Doctor or "Birdman" mask that I have been working on since the start of July. I decided not to add the glasses that are commonly seen on the masks.

It has a wiremesh skeleton and wire mesh covered eyes to keep the wearer concealed. It's paper mache and sanded down plaster of paris.

It's destination is Ghostwalk 2008 to be worn as a costume piece

How did you make the beak? How did you start with that shape?

Really good (and it reminds me of the spies from Spies VS Spies on MAD)

do you have a tutorial? because i would love to make a plague doctor mask and yours is te best one i've seen so far. i also like the idea of concealing the wearer's eyes, since i wanted that feature for my mask as well.

I started with a sheet of moderately thin wire mesh and loosely molded it to my face. All the excess part of the sheet I crumpled together kinda like a cone for the beak. Then all I did was paper mache (newspaper, water, and elmer's glue) the rest of the mask building it up layer by layer. I did tape off where I wanted the eyes and left that wire mesh exposed. After I was happy with the basic shape I smoothed it out with paper mulch (much like paper mache just easier to spread) and I sanded it down. I then used acrylic paints and a spray on finish to harden the paint finish. Lastly I took a black sharpie and colored the exposed wire that made up the eyes. A word of caution: paper mache made this mask really really heavy so I used pieces from a catcher's mask to wear it. This was my first mask and was pretty much trial and error. I suggest using a store bought lighter paper mache or plaster of paris mix that you can find in a craft store like Micheals. I hope this helps!

Awesome My sister made one of those for a school project last year... they're so much fun! Are you wearing the costume, or somebody else? Because you should post a picture when it's fully assembled.

Some one else is (actually my dad ) But I will most likely go as a plague doctor when the renaissance faire roles into town. I will most defiantly post a picture of the complete costume when it's together
