Description Some artwork I made some time ago. I wanted to try and capture the darker, psychological side of war.

Sonic, having been imprisoned in space for six months, tries to keep up appearances and seem like the same old speedy and carefree hedgehog everyone loves and knows him as. However, he is struggling with the mental exhaustion of his torment and hallucinations he's barely able to endure due to the Phantom Ruby's influence on him. A dark seed has been planted in his mind that threatens to bring out a darker, more vicious side of the lovable hero and it is taking everything Sonic has to keep it under control.

Zero had been captured by Eggman and tortured by the Phantom Ruby's powers as it tries to force a bond with him so to gain a body. Zero struggles with all his might to resist the ruby's power, but his will is slowly crumbling and losing ground. He endures this pain for a month, though he himself has honestly lost all track of time. Throughout it all, the only thing keeping Zero from succumbing to to the Phantom Ruby is his determination to return to his friend Prism. During one of the Phantom Ruby's illusions, Zero is made to believe that Prism had come to save him and tries to help him escape. Unfortunately, during the attempted escape, Zero is too weak and exhausted and helpless watches as he sees what he believes to be Prism be killed by one of Eggman's robots. Zero is so distraught by her apparent "death" and weak willed that he collapses, thinking he has just lost his only friend and reason to go on. With this final breaking of his mind, the Phantom Ruby takes full control of Zero and Eggman forces a mask on the jackal to keep the Phantom Ruby under his control. Zero has become nothing more than an empty puppet to a power controlled by a mad scientist, having lost all will to fight back.

Prism anxiously waits for her friend Zero to return home after the two of them had a big fight. However, as hours turns into days, she becomes more and more worried about him and tries looking for him. Months pass and there is no sign of her missing friend. Then the war begins. Prism becomes more desperate to find Zero as Eggman takes control of more of the world. She even joins the Resistance, hoping that he might have joined them and they can reunite at last or maybe she can find him amongst the refugees or rescue him if he had been captured. Sadly, despite her best efforts, there is just no trace of him. She then has her first encounter with the mysterious new threat Infinite whose power has allowed Eggman to conquer the world. She witnesses him mercilessly attack and kill several Resistance members and is about to be attacked by him, too. To her confusion and surprise, he doesn't. He just stares menacingly at her and gets uncomfortably close, telling her to run away in fear or else he'd kill her, too. Terrified and having no other choice, she runs like a coward. She is reminded of how helpless she is without her friend and missing him more than ever before. While she does begin to grow in confidence and strength after teaming up with the Ivory Wisp Sparks, she still can't help but miss her friend and loses faith in herself when she is confronted by Infinite again. Her world is completely shattered when she discovers that Infinite is, in fact, her missing friend Zero and helpless watches recordings of Zero being tortured and consumed by the Phantom Ruby. She is now torn between her desire to save her friend and the need to defeat the monster that conquered the world, now realizing that the two are one and the same. She doesn't want to fight her friend, but she may have no other choice but to fight him if she is to have any hope of saving him.

Regardless of what kind of torment one endures in war, whether you are a prisoner, tortured into becoming a killer, or a child looking for their missing friend, everyone suffers. War is no laughing matter. Everyone is tested in unimaginable ways and must make difficult decisions that may haunt them for the rest of their lives. And there's no guarantee that they'll make it out alive or return to who they were before. They may be changed for the better or the worse if they survive at all.
