How were those leaves modeled? It's brilliant, it really is with the branch structure and all of the detail.. does the program grow the leaves on a pre-defined branch structure from a procedure? It looks amazingly organic. Please tell me you did not model every leaf separately. That would be insane. The hedge trimmers are also very amusing, this would be a fantastic poster for a gardening working-bee

I definitely did not model each leaf individually. They are all completely identical. I could probably have afforded the time to make at least a few different variations, perhaps in tone or something just for an added touch. The leaves are in fact just hexagons with an alpha-masked photograph of a leaf from our bay tree.
Blender does have a procedural tree generating plugin, but I did not use it for this one. The basic structure is a thin cylinder along the centre of each finger and the thumb, and a slightly thicker one along the wrist, and the branches are generated from each of these using the hair system! (And some funky settings to make hair look like branches)
Similarly, the leaves are attached using a second (much denser) hair system. So the leaves do not, in fact, visibly connect to any branches. There is just enough coverage to fake it.

Other random fact: It is fully rigged, poseable, and able to be animated!

This is really cool, but also kind of scary. Like, will this topiary murder someone with those shears?
