Description

A civilian decorative map of Europe in 1965, during the period we now know as the Cold War.

This takes place in an alternate history universe in which Denmark, Norway, and Sweden form a military pact and attack Nazi Germany during the second world war, only to be invaded and conquered by the German reich. The Soviet Union invades and annexes Finland, and fights Germany on the Northern front as well as the eastern front, subsequently "liberating" Scandinavia, turning many Nordic countries into stalinist puppet states. The royal families of Norway & Denmark go into exile in the newly sovereign Icelandic republic, a decision which they quickly turn to regret as the radical isolationist party Einangrunarbandalagið are elected into power, which reject both advances by the Soviets and the United states to turn Iceland into a military base. The Icelandic constitution is fully revoked, and the Icelandic Free State is proclaimed.

The fates of the royal families are used as pawns for bargaining with the U.S. and U.S.S.R. over remaining neutral and sovereign, while Denmark is split into two, the "Free Denmark" Danish provisional government in the NATO protectorate of Greenland, and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Denmark, which has gained territorial control over Scania and Northern Germany to give the U.S.S.R. full control over the Baltic Sea.

In this timeline, the Allies and the Comintern were much harsher on the Kingdom of Italy, the newly liberated Communist Republic of Austria gaining South Tyrol and the Swiss Confederacy receiving a chunk of Piedmont as reperations. France grows larger as Sardinia and the Saarland become French protectorates before being annexed with time. Yugoslavia also becomes much larger because I hate hungary and it deserves as little land as plausibly possible.
