Well look at this beautiful piece. It really deserves a good critique so I feel I must respond.

To start off, I must say that I am simply amazed at your technique. Your brush strokes are so clean that it feels as if the painting was poured rather than painted individually by hand. I like how you repeated the sky colors just slightly in the water. You seem to have a great aptitude for representing complimentary colors. By that I mean that you chose the perfect orange and purple to contrast with the blue. Your rock textures are smoothly polished and they stand as a great way to break up the space of the water. Without them I think the image would lose much of its charm.

The only problems I see in this piece are the slight uneven horizon line and perhaps the size of the background trees. The horizon tilts just slightly down on the left side instead of being completely straight. It could just be the photo, perhaps your hand was slightly tilted and caused the horizon line to appear off. If not this could be fixed in future paintings by using a T-square to accurately measure a line across the painting where you want the horizon to go. Or perhaps, maybe a tripod to be absolutely sure the photo was balanced.

One of my professors used to say that there should be no two lines the same on any piece. She believed that it created more interest in a piece if the "horizon" line wasn't exactly centered in the plane. I think yours is fine as it is, but perhaps it is too close to "even center" of the piece.. it would create more of a "pop" if it was lower or higher on the painting. I don't think it really needs that adjustment, as I am just repeating what an art professor would suggest in a proper critique.

As for the trees, I wonder if they are sized appropriate, perhaps they are too small... or maybe not enough of them... I can't tell how far back they are in reality so if this was a plein air painting I could see them being that size if they were really far away. I love how you colored them with the bright sunlight that shines through the clouds in the backdrop.

Anyway, I really do love this piece. I think you have a wonderful touch that no one else could have. It is unique and fascinating. You can really feel the movement of the water and taste the moisture in the air. I can't say enough about your clouds. I love the shapes and the forms you put so much effort to creating.

Overall, another great piece. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to write about such an amazing work!

Mikko,

I think all artists are that way. Its almost like an addiction or something because all I ever want to do is paint. Also, perfectionism is contagious. We all want to rework our images to the extent that occasionally they become over worked. I have come to an understanding that once I sign my paintings I never go back and retouch them, even after a critique or something.

A work, even for your namesake (Michelangelo), may only seem perfect to everyone else. It never seems to be "finished". I'm sure even He always nitpicked his work. My favorite work of Michelangelo's; in fact... one of the things that started my "artistic" ability was visiting the Louvre in Paris where many of M's works are shown.

If you read the comments on Soul Bound [link] I explained what happened in my youth and why it affected me so.

One thing you learn from old masters is that they never gave up. They worked as artists during the age when heavy labor meant food on the table. Paintings are "hard", but back then they were only for the prim and proper. Art was not an option. So, whenever you start feeling like your work isn't good enough, take a look back at the renaissance period, imagine how they felt, and then come to realize that your heart is all that matters. Pour your heart out and be glad. Anyone can become an artist, but not everyone has the talent to become a "talented one".

Wow, those brush strokes! The sky looks very Van-Gogh/Impressionistic esque. I love the hints of impressionism in your strokes. It's a beautiful technique you are applying with these pop of colors. Very nice work.Β

This piece is beautiful. Did you look at a photo refrence? Were you at this place? Is it real? I know I'm not good at drawing on my iPad or computer, because I find it hard. But my specialty in real life is painting landscapes. Of you can do such work on your mobile device, I really do wonder how you paint in real life! Keep working!
