For as long as he could remember, Kovu had been told by his mother Zira that he was a very special lion. He was an orphan that had been hand-picked by King Scar to be his heir, and that he would someday overthrow the Pridelands' monarch King Simba and take back the land that rightfully belonged to Scar and his followers. Ever since he was a young cub he was trained by her to be a killer, a beast that was destined to eliminate a false king, and he definitely would have gone down a dark path in life.

That is, had it not been for a lioness named Kiara.

Kiara was the daughter of the king he was destined to kill. The two of them met by accident once when they were both cubs and Kovu, having been raised in such a harsh environment, was initially taken aback by her kindness. The two were soon seperated by their respetive parents, but Kovu would still occasionally think of her as the years went by. He ends up reuniting with her when he finally infiltrates the Pridelands as an adult, and the more time he spends with her and the rest of the Pridelanders, he begins to question if killing Simba was really necessary. He didn't want to dissapoint his family, or Scar for that matter, but he also didn't really want to hurt anyone. He intends to tell Simba of his mother's plan to kill him, but before he can explain Zira and her lionesses ambush the two of them, with the failed ambush resulting in Zira's son Nuka being killed by falling logs and Simba exiling Kovu from the Pridelands. After his exile Kovu ends up reuniting with Kiara, and the two of them return to the Pridelands to hopefully put an end to the divide between their prides once and for all.

When they do return, their families are engaged in a vicious battle, but Kiara and Kovu are able to put an end to all the bloodshed. Many of the Outsiders end up siding with the two of them, but Zira is still unable to let it go and makes one last attempt to take down Simba, which results in her falling to her death in the nearby rapids.

After the war was over and the two prides became united as one, an Outsider lioness named Laika (who had been very close with Zira when she was still alive) reveals to Kovu his true origins. He was never technically chosen by Scar to be his heir, and he had actually been born several months after hs death. She tells Kovu that he was originally named "Kheri" and had to been born to Zira's sister Kijinga, that Zira chose him to be Scar's new heir due to his strong resemblance to him, and how Zira ended up killing his mother to prevent her from making him too soft. Laika, having witnessed Kijinga's murder, was threatened by Zira to not tell anyone about how Kijinga really died, or else her two daughters would meet the same fate. While saddened to know that Zira had killed his true mother, he is also relieved to hear that he had never really been chosen by the tyrant king.

Now choosing to go by his birth name, Kheri and Kiara become mates and rule the Pridelands with love and kindness for many years, and the story of how their love united two warring prides ends up being told for many generations to come.

Decided to give Kovu a new ref sheet. You'll also notice that I drew him with a much fuller mane that the one he has in TLK2. In my headcanon Kovu was a young adult that hadn't completely finished growing yet, so this is how I imagine he'd look one his mane had finished growing in.
