Description Edit: Ahh! Thank you for the DD!

Time for something a little different!

I've been wanting to illustrate a simplified ocean creature image for some time now, ever since I heard this Monterey Bay Aquarium-like song: [link] Radiohead's Treefingers totally sounds like the same ambient music played in the Aquarium's exhibits! It just has the feeling of "The DEEP".

So, since I'm interning at the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Image Resource department, I sort through and edit a bunch of photography, and the other day I chanced upon this one tiny and grainy photo of a shark looming headfirst towards the camera - I thought it was a pretty cool image and that it would look even better as a wallpaper.

So that pic was the inspiration for this piece - all reconstructed from memory (body is more filled out here - the pic was pretty much just head-tail shark lol), and with a bunch of fish and bubbles added too. XD I dunno what species of shark I painted though... Dreamy shark to go along with that music!

Finished this in a few hours, on my b-day. Photoshop CS2 and Wacom Intuos 3. Original size is 3000px wide. 3 colors used for the bg gradient, and only 2 (the highlight and shadow) used to color everything else. Any other colors you see were created via blending modes. (And no vectors this time either!)

What i see the most complex here is the sea, the bubbles look cartoonish which make it adorable and soften the creepy xD but is a good creepy! I particulary love the sharks, I instantly see this as a poster, a documental or even a movie, this is good to teach, attract, sell and show what is comming, what ever it is, and worth the view, a rich view.

I know it's copyright protected and I always respect copyrights, however I don't really like the font. it breaks the compositon, you could have place it in the corner of the work

Hmm.... Well, this here particular piece of art is quite stunning I say... But it is "The Deep", and we know very little of it. It has to be darker, to represent the unknown territory of the sea, it has to represent the dangers that may lie below the tons of planetary water supply, and a single, very dim beam of light should come down to illuminate the bioluminescent words - THE DEEP.

Just constructive criticism, I did like this piece, but still wanted to see darker tones.

MissNysha In reply to Vladislav-Salata [2011-11-01 23:49:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah you're right, that is another possible concept. I've thought of darker colors and "deeper" animals, but this time I wanted to focus on a shark silhouette surrounded in open waters. In this way, we don't know how vast the water spreads around him or how deep the water goes below him. He is just among it in his element, swimming peacefully, while we look up at him from below... An image focusing directly on the darkness below illustrates a bit too much information - and different from what I wanted to convey. Instead of the dangerous and unknown, I preferred to illustrate the mysterious and majestic - like how it feels to immerse in the experience at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Your idea would be worth another new painting, but the sound I'd use to convey how I feel about those types of depths would be more like the haunting "bloop" sound: [link] which is quite a contrast to what Radiohead's "Treefingers" makes me feel of the deep.

Thanks for the comment! Keep giving new suggestions/ideas!

Hmm... Of course... Well, you know, I do try to draw something sometimes, but I always get VERY lazy to finish it off. My gallery is not much, but maybe you can have a gander at it. I think I am better with drawing massive battles/sceneries with medium amounts of detail. I dont know, no inspiration at all lately.
