Woah, very interesting style. It takes away some of her attractiveness, and sharpens her features. It harshens the lines and makes her look old and wrinkled. The color choice of grey for her hair pushes this even further. Very interesting choices.

Well I definitely agree that the best parts of her story are when she has a harder edge, and has to find her strength. I like her more and more as her story goes on.

The problem I always run into are people that are not necessarily into creating art. They may create something (sewing, or doing some creative activity), but unless you sit there with a canvas and make something yourself, or appreciate those who do, I don't think you really get it so much. It's a big thing to create something out of a completely blank canvas/surface following absolutely no directions. There is no set way to do it. Even if you use a reference there is a translation that has to occur in your head so that the image is remade through your eyes. And I think the ones who think they are creative, but aren't at the same level as painters (and others like even sculptors), have a tendency to really try and put everyone into the same mold. IE..this is what I think good art is therefore every artist should look like this.
I get that sometimes people aren't going to like your work. That's totally fine. But I don't feel you should be telling people that are perfectly happy with what they're doing that core elements of the work are not right - just because you have a cookie cutter idea of what art is. I speak from experience with this exact painting. On the other hand, if I ask for critique, which I do in some cases, if you look for technique and or what works and doesn't work..I love hearing what people think. One friend mentioned the area under the nose is a bit too defined..and I actually agreed. But don't tell me that the character was light and pretty and I made her look too dark and haggard because you just don't get it. There are already a bunch of artists out there who go for photo-realism and are amazing at it. That is just not what I strive for.
Oh also, you left out MLP and anthros! xD And I think popularity will come, but most artists don't realize how long they will have to wait for it. It feels like it takes long enough just to get half way decent at painting! Then to have to wait for people to appreciate it too! Just have to stop worrying about it so much, and focus more on creating new work. BTW, I haven't had a chance to comment yet, but your work is stunning. I will have to try and work on leaving useful comments myself. A lot of the time it is difficult for me to put words to why I like something. I really do appreciate your comments though. Made my month..maybe longer
