Description
They say we are what we are
But we don't have to be.
I'm bad behavior but I do it in the best way.
I'll be the watcher (watcher) of the eternal flame.
I'll be the guard dog of all your fever dreams.

(...)
I Try to picture me without you, but I can't

'Cause we could be immortals, immortals
Just not for long, for long.
And live with me forever now,
You pull the blackout curtains down
Just not for long, for long.
(...)

- "Immortals" by Fall Out Boy

A little something I made after watching Big Hero 6... and totally falling in love with the soundtrack *-*
I think it really fits Brambleclaw and - especially - Hawkfrost and his intentions.
Oh, by the way: This is one of the last scenes from "Sunset", right before Bramble and Hawk fight and the latter dies... kinda accidentally (eventhough it was a necessity. If Bramble didn't kill his brother by accident, there would've been at least 2 more cat's who had enough reasons to kill him... .__.). Is it just me, or does this happen quite often to villians in these books?
Anyways, I hope you like it. One or two years ago I already made a picture of Hawk's death... but I always felt like there was more to the situation, than just his death. There was so much tension between those two cats. Bramble always lived in the present. The "here and now" counted, while Hawk was like a remnant of the past. He kept his father's ideals alive and tried to infect his brother's mind with them. I don't believe, that Hawk was born evil... He was just stubborn and ambitious to get revenge for a father he never knew. His past was what made him the villian. I wonder what a cat he would've been without his father's influence.

Next upload will be the new comic page!! It's amost finished!

It's called lighting.

Koldian In reply to moth-wing [2016-07-31 12:44:58 +0000 UTC]

Hi! sorry for the long response to a month late comment, but this bugged me a bit as someone who obsesses over colors and light. I've struggled with light, color, and how light effects color, and I've been told many times how to correct them. I still mess up sometimes. Hope I don't step on any paws, but this is kinda here to save anyone reading this being mislead.

I love Mizu's art style, and how she does her comics and images in general. But I can tell you definitely that this is less lighting, and more of a style choice. Here . Different lighting, similar eye color. Both Blue and Hawk have blue eyes, but the lighting in each image is different.Β

In a sunset, blue eyes should still look like they have some sort of blue in them, especially when the sun isn't in their eyes. The sun is behind Hawkfrost, so there's no reason for them to be this shade of orange.
yes.
orange. It's too intense, as if the artist took 'ice blue' and used more ice than blue. As a result, it makes it appear as if Hawkfrost's base eye color is white or pale yellow as opposed to the blue in hisΒ official art here . It's a good effect, don't get me wrong, but to me it looks a little off. It's (once again) clearly a style choice because if it were just lighting, the eyes would be a different color. I'd show you what I mean, and what I think would be a better color choice but I don't like editing other artists' work without permission.

With the sun being behind HawkfrostΒ rather than in front, the light shouldn't be turning his eyes the color of the sun behind them. It'd be another story if the light source was in front, or even reflecting off the water. But both the sun, and the lake are behind him. Not to mention Brambleclaw. If it were a lighting choice I believe Bramble would have a similar color scheme(or Palette? I can't words.), but a little more dark and saturated. I adore Mizu's attention to the eyes to make them shine so brightly, but these eyes look more like the sun has been cast in front of the cats rather than behind.

You should never use 'It's called lighting' on an image as an excuse for incorrect color.

Hope this helps explain a few things. I'm not gonna write a full critique of an image that's over a year old, but this is something I felt I should bring to attention being that you're not the first person on this submission to say that the eye color is due to lighting.

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

moth-wing In reply to Koldian [2016-08-02 17:55:52 +0000 UTC]

The artist has done this on multiple submissions, and when she actually takes the time to go and repeat herself over and over and over again, whether it's because Character A's eye color "isn't right" or Character B "isn't x color" - her response is that it's the lighting - which I'll admit that the "lighting" isn't even the stem of my actual irritation here, which, yes, is my fault, and more of a knee-jerk response with said previous responses by the artist kept in mind in a manner that could or could not be considered confrontational, but I digress. If it's incorrect, then it's incorrect.

Why the frigidity-frack does it even matter if an artist uses a color - for, well, anything on anything that isn't canon or "right?" (Especially in this silly series, where the writer's can't even stay consistent with their characters.) Why do you have to parrot the twenty or so other comments saying the exact same thing?
Why even comment at all if that's the only thing you're going to say? That's not commenting about the art itself. It's not "constructive criticism" or whatever else people use as a silly justification. You are going to something an artist put time into only to say to them, "you're wrong."

(And yet they're the one preaching to me (???) about hostility, maturity and interpretting things at face value here? Hah. Haha.)

I don't like long debate comments, because there is literally nothing to argue about but whatever. Take offense. Do you get mad when you see people writing critiques on anything you enjoy? Do you like when artists grow stagnate?

Ah yes, the noble parrot. The creature that only repeats what everyone else has said.
Except it's something I'm not.
You took what I said at face value and didn't bother actually reading what I wrote. It didn't matter how educated I was in my response, it didn't matter what I linked. You immediately slipped into some sort of battle mode as if I had attacked you or Mizu when all I said was that it wasn't lighting and it was a style choice.
I didn't even say she needed to change it???
I was differentiating between lighting and style choice??? LMAO???
I really don't care if Mizu keeps doing her eyes this way.
Β It isn't even sent to the artist, it was towards you and literally anyone who think you can use lighting as an excuse to showcase incorrect coloration. Firstly, I'm not neon lmao, so I don't know why you're so hostile. I didn't come at you with any hostility and gave you a calm and educated response. I've never been to art school of any sort but I've gotten my critiques personally from students who have and I even asked for their input.Β

Second of all, I said it was more of a style choice, rather than lighting. If Mizu says it's for lighting, then I'm sorry but that doesn't add up?? The only time light changes the color of the entire eye is if the light is hitting the eye or if light is absent. If light is absent it darkens the eye, if the light is right on the eye then the eye looks brighter. It's that simple. Bramble's eyes aren't effected by the light at all even though he's in Hawkfrost's light as well. I know she claims lighting and that she's done it on other pictures. I literally linked one as an example. It, honestly, is more of a style choice than any sort of lighting.

Take it this way.
If someone had commissioned you to draw something, and you chose to use a different color because you thought it looked good your client would then ask you to correct it. Or if the client was really unhappy, they'd ask for a refund. If your client likes you they're more likely to ask for a correction. I doubt you're experienced enough with that but it happens almost every time in the art business. Here's an example, see? . While the issue with the design was the commissioner's fault, the artist forgot the bracelet and they were asked to correct it. So yes, every little detail counts even if it's just the eye color.

I said what I said moreso for anyone that looks at Mizu's art for any sort of inspiration or reference.
I'll say this again, a thousand times if I have to. The excuse of lighting will not fly if you use it as an excuse for why you didn't stick to the reference.
If someone pays you to draw something, 9/10 they're going to want it to look exactly like it should. Sometimes people are comissioned to draw OCs, sometimes canon characters. If it doesn't look like the reference offered, or like the official art from that show or book series people are going to say something.

here, I googled constructive criticism for you:
"Constructive criticismΒ is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one. The purpose of 'constructive criticismΒ is to improve the outcome."

And that's what my contact contained. Nothing in my comment was worded with hostility, and believe it or not I did make positive comments of what I liked. The reason I didn't make comments about the whole peiece was because I was talking about the eyes not the whole bloody picture. None of my points were invalid, and as I said before the argument that it's lighting doesn't' make sense because the sun and lake(a reflective light source) are behind them both. They're in shadow, there is literally no reason for Hawkfrost's eyes to be that shade of orange if his base color was blue. I think you can see that, I think you don't care. You seem to think that constructive criticism shouldn't exist period. I don't care if Mizu doesn't want to correct it, but as I keep saying and even stated right in the beginning of my Β comment:

"this is kinda here to save anyone reading this being mislead"

That's it. THERE IT IS. If you used the excuse "it's called lighting" in a professional environment or art school I can safely say that you would be laughed out of the room. I'm trying to save anyone who reads this who wants to do artwork professional the embarrassment of that.

By the way.

"Why even comment at all if that's the only thing you're going to say? That's not commenting about the art itself."
If I wasn't making a comment about the art itself it wouldn't be a comment l m a o.
All comments about the art don't have to be "WOW IT LOOKS SO COOL" or "oh mah gosh I wish I could draw like that"
Surprise! A critique is still talking about the art itself. That's, you know, what a critique is.
Surprise, I did in fact make comments about how I like the attention to the eyes that Mizu always shows. It's one of my favorite things about her artwork.
But I stand by what I said even more now.

You're clearly someone inexperienced and someone who doesn't know how to take literally any sort ofΒ criticism. Your comment of "Β It's not "constructive criticism" or whatever else people use as a silly justification.Β "
sells that. I'm not here to be anyone's enemy or to be an asshole. I offered sound advice, stated my point calmly and with links, and you took offense to it. Amazing. I love this attitude that people have towards critiques these day. It makes my heart sing as it recedes another three inches into my body. Reading your comment wasΒ incrediblyΒ disheartening, and once again I sat here baffled as to why someone would complain aboutΒ something meant to help someone.

This wasn't going to be a long comment, but look what happened.
Regardless.
I trust you have enough maturity and understanding to know that this is not an argument you should pursue. My stance will never change, and I doubt you will either no matter how many facts I slam down.
