I didn't hit the hilt. the hit on the handle is to knock any blood off the blade.

Hilt - The lower portion of a sword consisting of the cross-guard, handle/grip, and pommel (most Medieval swords have a straight cross or cruciform-hilt).
but thank you for the reply

There are two-person kata that do this in a variety of schools. The typical one is Ukenagashi, basically aggressor and defender taking turns deflecting and attacking. Would be great to see a motion study of that.

That was an Iaido draw, wasn't it? Very different from mine. I should do a motion capture of some of my draws and such sometime, as well as get some photos of our form. (Not that yours is bad!) You were centerweighted the whole cut, is that part of the Iaido style? I profess I know little about it, though I know a few Iaijutsu draw-cuts though I haven't got much practice with them.

I can believe it would have, I don't want to be involved in that! My style we're always forward weighted, it's just how we roll and our bodies are sideways, or as close as we can reasonably get to stay out of the way as much as possible. I did notice the dropping of the shoulders and that's a little different from our style. We drop everything but the knees. The shoulders, everything just slides downwards like a sack of hammers behind the blow - and the hips turn somewhat to provide a bit of torque. It's a different focus, of course, and I totally respect what you do! I'm just finding the difference interesting.

It's an odd amalgamation of Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu, and Yanagi Ryu. My sensei doesn't have a name for it yet, but we're very heavily leaning towards our basis in Yanagi Ryu. We had Don Angier out here last year to do a seminar and are hoping to bring him back this summer - that should be exciting. He's a really wonderful guy, him and his top student, Jeremy. They're both really intelligent people and a joy to train with, as my sensei tells me. I have not had the pleasure (I didn't have the money for the last seminar, regrettably). I also do a fair amount of open hand, but that's not what we're discussing!

The sword is my custom-forged bugei katana, with a 2" overlong blade, 2" overlong handle. It's a real work of art.
My slow-mo camera doesn't record audio. I have a few other recordings with the faint 'zip' of the blade but none from this set - I had a diesel heater running to get the room warm and it was LOUD.

ah man.. sad face x 20 for the no audio. Are you going to be doing any slow-mo tameshigiri? it would be awesome if you sliced open some fruit or perhaps an article of clothing of some sort? I wish I had a good enough camera to run in slow motion for my cuts, I'll have to have my buddy with his canon7d shoot some stuff of me and get your critique on my stance and form.

I haven't done any tame - other than my fakes. I'm mostly reluctant to risk my blades' polish.

Oh yeah, I have seen the second half of the chiburi with the blade sweep, it was just the portion with the fist pounding the handle which was unusual.
Very neat, thanks!
