Description It's been about 20 years since I was really in practice, so I nearly couldn't bear to post this; I felt so rusty and slow. Mostly, I was just happy because I've never tried to draw for speed with this particular katana - it's quite a bit longer than the one I learned with, and having an extra two inches "up there" can be really dangerous if you lose track of where the tip of the blade is. Especially since the polish on this one is really fine and it's extremely sharp. I dropped my shoulders forward slightly on the first cut - it's amazing how revealing all the slow-motion can be. Every slight mistake is right there!

1/10 speed, shot with a Casio EX-F1 high speed camera at 300FPS. "real time" this was about 2 seconds or so.

Intesteing I also practice, I think your form looked good, only a slight hestitation or falter that I could pick on resheathing the sword.- Im no expert either and have done only a few Yrs official training that included the Katana.
I know what you mean by the extra lenght. and every new sort in a different animal

mjranum-stock In reply to emo-screamo-boy [2010-03-06 04:34:31 +0000 UTC]

I didn't hit the hilt. the hit on the handle is to knock any blood off the blade.

Hilt - The lower portion of a sword consisting of the cross-guard, handle/grip, and pommel (most Medieval swords have a straight cross or cruciform-hilt).

but thank you for the reply

Yes! Definitely. isn't that awesome

Ok, you can take that as a joke.

By the way I was wondering if you could do this with two people. One hitting other one blocking. it would be great to see the defenders reaction. I hope I am not asking for too much.

Tanqexe In reply to saidist [2010-03-01 07:17:26 +0000 UTC]

There are two-person kata that do this in a variety of schools. The typical one is Ukenagashi, basically aggressor and defender taking turns deflecting and attacking. Would be great to see a motion study of that.

InTheWings [2010-02-28 17:49:40 +0000 UTC]

That was an Iaido draw, wasn't it? Very different from mine. I should do a motion capture of some of my draws and such sometime, as well as get some photos of our form. (Not that yours is bad!) You were centerweighted the whole cut, is that part of the Iaido style? I profess I know little about it, though I know a few Iaijutsu draw-cuts though I haven't got much practice with them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mjranum-stock In reply to InTheWings [2010-02-28 20:43:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it was. Iaido is very much based on remaining centered and grounded for mobility - I actually dropped my shoulders slightly forward into the draw (mostly because I wanted to make damn sure I cleared the scabbard) that is a minor no-no. Iaido katas involve trying to deal with attackers from multiple directions, so you cannot get your weight in motion or you're toast. You'll notice on the second cut, I sort of lifted and dropped my body as the blade went home - that's about as much displacement as I was taught to permit. You can see that the blade came down pretty hard. That would have really hurt.

InTheWings In reply to mjranum-stock [2010-03-01 06:12:38 +0000 UTC]

I can believe it would have, I don't want to be involved in that! My style we're always forward weighted, it's just how we roll and our bodies are sideways, or as close as we can reasonably get to stay out of the way as much as possible. I did notice the dropping of the shoulders and that's a little different from our style. We drop everything but the knees. The shoulders, everything just slides downwards like a sack of hammers behind the blow - and the hips turn somewhat to provide a bit of torque. It's a different focus, of course, and I totally respect what you do! I'm just finding the difference interesting.

What style is it you're practicing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InTheWings In reply to mjranum-stock [2010-03-01 20:19:51 +0000 UTC]

It's an odd amalgamation of Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu, and Yanagi Ryu. My sensei doesn't have a name for it yet, but we're very heavily leaning towards our basis in Yanagi Ryu. We had Don Angier out here last year to do a seminar and are hoping to bring him back this summer - that should be exciting. He's a really wonderful guy, him and his top student, Jeremy. They're both really intelligent people and a joy to train with, as my sensei tells me. I have not had the pleasure (I didn't have the money for the last seminar, regrettably). I also do a fair amount of open hand, but that's not what we're discussing!

I've been waiting for you to post something like this for awhile now , I was wondering what sword it was you were using? I was also wondering if you could a video where we hear the cuts that sound is truly beautiful. I do this with my sword strikes all the time to realize what I'm doing wrong to correct it for good posture and form. Thanks for posting this

The sword is my custom-forged bugei katana, with a 2" overlong blade, 2" overlong handle. It's a real work of art.

My slow-mo camera doesn't record audio. I have a few other recordings with the faint 'zip' of the blade but none from this set - I had a diesel heater running to get the room warm and it was LOUD.

JChico In reply to mjranum-stock [2010-03-01 20:20:33 +0000 UTC]

ah man.. sad face x 20 for the no audio. Are you going to be doing any slow-mo tameshigiri? it would be awesome if you sliced open some fruit or perhaps an article of clothing of some sort? I wish I had a good enough camera to run in slow motion for my cuts, I'll have to have my buddy with his canon7d shoot some stuff of me and get your critique on my stance and form.

I haven't done any tame - other than my fakes. I'm mostly reluctant to risk my blades' polish.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mjranum-stock In reply to Jagash [2010-02-28 21:31:03 +0000 UTC]

Shoden Katori. The chiburi is one I lifted from something I saw Risuke Otake do when I was a kid. It looks kind of weird in slow-mo - in real speed it's very fast and a bit flashy. Watching the blade edge sweep toward my knuckles is a bit scarifying - in real speed you never notice that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Jagash In reply to mjranum-stock [2010-03-01 05:01:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I have seen the second half of the chiburi with the blade sweep, it was just the portion with the fist pounding the handle which was unusual.

Very neat, thanks!
