Description Based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, and done for my Sci-Fi/Fantasy illustration class. >.<

I believe in "The Snow Queen", Kay is either ten or twelve years old. The prompt for the class, however, suggested we make him at least a teenager, and this I happily did.

Green ice!

Full-view is the ultimate good.

Nice job!!! The colors are nice and vivid;  I love how the Snow Queen looks like she's seducing Kay...

Are you looking forward to Disney's "Frozen"?

If you're interested, I did something similar (feedback welcome) : joyhorse13.deviantart.com/art/...

Keep up the good work!!!

Thank you so much. I'm glad you like it!

We'll see about "Frozen". It's sure to look pretty but, as is the case with most Disney movies, I'm never sure if I'll like it until I watch it. XD And even then, they usually slip in some things I just find irksome. So, well see!

I had a gander at your character designs. I'm glad you decided to go with an influence that isn't the typical northern European angle. Keep going!

Oh my goodness I love this SO much!! It's my favorite fairy tale! I really love your Kai. I always interpreted the story as him and Gerda being older, maybe late teens, because at the end of the story it says they look at each other and realize they are grown up. Anyways the background looks so icy cold and lonely and beautiful... I really love this.

MNat In reply to ghostyheart [2011-02-10 01:33:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! In most representations I've seen, Gerda and Kai usually looked about 12 years old for some reason. I guess "grown up" is subjective XD But I did imagine them a little older too--old enough to fall in love, at least.

Oh also there was that one part where Gerda thought Kai had married the princess, so that put him in his teens in my mind to be old enough to get married. But I suppose a fairy tale can be however you like it to be. ^^ Anyways you're very welcome, I truly do love it.

I always saw Kai and Gerda like 10 or less. In the original story Kai is mentioned as "Little Kai" and Gerda as "little Gerda." There's no way they are teenagers.

yeah but they kiss and get married at the end. they grow up through the story.

I heard Disney was gonna make a movie out of this great tale...but quit. So that stinks big time.

I've seen a few animated renditions of the Snow Queen before (one an anime and one a very oldschool animation by...gah, I wish I could remember the creators! x.x)But it's too bad Disney flaked out. I would've loved to have seen their character designs for the snow queen. @,@

Beautiful! This is my favorite hans Christian Anderson story! I love the scene--very icy! I believe that the boy's name is actual "Kay" or "Kai" in some texts. Very wonderful!!

I was wondering about his name. In the prompt, our instructor wrote it as "Karl". I had thought his name was Kay, but then I thought perhaps I was wrong? Apparently not!

Thanks!

THE SNOW QUEEN!!! One of my most favorite fairy tales EVER.

And this is so dang gorgeous. I LOVE how you draw hair. I'm in awe of it more and more with each picture you draw. . . it's insane. And yah, that ice is pretty much spectacular. It's amazing how you can do that with just the colors of the ice.

And 'tis the season for The Snow Queen (even if it doesn't snow where I live). Though its not a particularly heart-warming tale. >.< I always found it a little depressing, really. But maybe that has something to do with all the snow! SnowEATH!

It surprising how many childhood stories and movies are innately disturbing or creepy. x.x Nowadays, kids stuff seems to be put forth with an attitude of "NO! EVERYTHING IS HAPPY AND GLITTERY! AHHHH!" >.<

Grimms Tales (and those of their contemporar fairy tale authors) are full of violence, really. I loved those when I was a kid, both on audio cassettes and reading the originals. They're pretty evil all around, the baddies usually DIE and don't just lose and learn a lesson, or god forbid, get TURNED! XD
Heads and feet get hacked off, witches burned, children eaten...there were CONSEQUENCES! D:

Actually, this painting totally depresses me...x.x No one in my class had anything good to say about it, and my teacher seems honestly disapointed by it. x.x After class I felt like going home, writing some sad poetry and running a butter knife over my wrist until I got the courage to PUSH DOWN.

OMG she does look like Maleficent.z.z like albino Malefisant! WTF!? No one warned me!

I'm not familiar with this tale. What's the premise?

Mmm I love those steps... and the wall of ice on the left. It looks so cold and solid. I really like the stlye you put her hair in, it feels medieval but messy-modern too and I like the connotation of horns. Her face is such a picture of condescension... brrr.

Also love how you left her nails and the string of beads on her dress perfectly white. Great shading on where her thigh meets her dress, the softness works.

I love the pristine, frigid feeling in this so much... not just the colours you chose or the setting but even her pose- touching him delicately and all poised like that- feels chilly.

Super awesome job.

The story goes something like this: a little girl and little boy are BFF but one day the little boy gets a shard of the Snow Queen's mirror in his eye (a snowflake) and suddenly turns into a huge brat. Then the snow queen abducts him! and his little girlfriend has to go and save him frmo her castle of ice. When she finds him, he's almost frozen to death but I think she like...cries on him..or something...and the shard is disloged from his eye, he returns to normal ad liiiives! Horraay!

The moral of the story, naturally, is don't look up durring a snowstorm.
