The Daughter of Man-bat. As a child, Rebecca Langstrom always admired her father, Kirk for his devotion to his family. However as time went on, Rebecca's opinion of her father soon changed when he kept delving into his work at Gotham University rather than spend time with his wife and child. Unbeknownst to either of them, however, Kirk had a good reason to keep working long hours. Though he never told his family anything, Kirk Langstrom was actually diagnosed with Lymphoma and has been looking for a way to cure it. As a Professor of Chemistry and Genetics, Kirk tried desperately to develop new ways to break down his tumour and once again live a normal life, however, each attempt always ended in failure. Just as he was about to give up hope, a good friend and colleague of his, Dr Emile Dorian, offered his assistance and thus Kirk was finally able to complete a stable cure. Since Dr Dorian was a Professor of Chemistry and Zoology, thus knowing about most genetic capabilities in the animal kingdom, he suggested that using the anti-coagulant properties of the saliva of vampire bats could possibly break down Kirk's tumour. As luck would have it, the blood tests proved to confirm this theory.

Unfortunately, not everything was as good as it seemed at first. Too desperate to wait for more tests to be performed, against the wishes of Dr Dorian Kirk injected himself with the first test patch of the new formula, resulting in the worst possible outcome, though the serum DID cure his cancer, it also mutated him, splicing his DNA with that of the bat saliva in his serum, turning him into a gigantic Human-Bat hybrid. Thus he became Gotham's first "Man-Bat" Thankfully his rampage was short-lived and Man-Bat was quickly subdued by Batman before Dr Dorian finally cured him with a gene-cleanser he was able to whip up. Unfortunately, while the cure did turn Kirk Human again, the formula he initially injected himself with turned out to be highly addictive and he had to commit himself to Arkham Asylum until he could learn to control his newfound urges.

Unaware of anything that had happened to her father, the secret identity of the "Man-Bat" being kept secret from anyone to avoid unnecessary Press coverage, Rebecca grew to resent Kirk more and more, thus she began to develop a more rebellious persona the older she got. By the time she was 18, while her father was still incarcerated, Rebecca had fallen in with a terrible crowd, turning to teenage drinking and drugs on the streets, much to her mother's dismay and heartbreak. One day, while she was on one of her benders, Rebecca found her way into her father's old laboratory at Gotham University, smashing up the room in a fit of bottled-up rage. It was then that she discovered a sample of the Man-Bat formula her father had kept in the lab for future study, believing it to be nothing more than a simple drug, the same stuff that landed her father in rehab, in her intoxicated rage, she too injected herself with the formula. And just like her father, the consequences of her actions resulted in a terrible mutation. However, though her father had a basic mutation, thanks to all the drugs that she already had in her bloodstream, Rebecca's mutation was even worse. Because of the mix of chemicals in her blood, the resulting effect caused the Man-bat serum to become even stronger, thus Rebecca was turned into an even more powerful Bat-hybrid, one which would soon prove to be even more difficult to cure.
