Bio: One of the youngest of the high gods, as well as the only Olympian to have a mortal mother. As the result of yet another affair enacted by his father, Zeus, his mother, Semele, the daughter of Mortal King Cadmus was visited by Hera disguised as an old crone once she had discovered the pregnancy. During this time, Hera befriended Semele, who confided in her that Zeus was the actual father of the baby in her womb, as part of her plan, Hera pretended not to believe her, and planted seeds of doubt in Semele's mind. Curious, Semele demanded that Zeus reveal himself in all his glory as proof of his godhood. Though Zeus begged her not to ask this, she persisted and he agreed. Therefore, he came to her wreathed in bolts of lightning; mortals, however, could not look upon an undisguised god without dying, and she perished in the ensuing blaze. After that Zeus rescued the unborn Dionysus by sewing him into his thigh, and a few months later, Dionysus was born on Mount Pramnos, now matured as a God. When Dionysus grew up, he discovered the culture of the vine and the mode of extracting its precious juice, being the first god to do so. However Hera struck him with madness, and drove him to wander through various parts of the earth. Eventually, upon arriving in Phrygia, the goddess, Cybele, better known to the Greeks as Rhea, cured him of his madness and taught him her religious rites, afterward he set out on a progressive journey through Asia, teaching the people the cultivation of the vine and celebration.
