(Huh... so he actually has issues, like, the words or letters move around in your brain and you can't put them together right issues? ... That... has to be a major problem for him.)

I gave him my issues. there is this one scene in BatB when she reads to him and he wouldn't have been as isolated in this AU so I gave him my dyslexia to to explain why no teacher or amount of schooling had made him a decent reader.

(Ah, fair enough... it does certainly garner my sympathy, and it makes for a sweet scene with Belle recognizing his difficulty and adjusting properly.)

He couldn't read as a monster as he hadn't had a teacher dare teach him.
That be weird in this AU, were he is a human and a student. someone should be doing their job.
So to be true to the original, that he has a problem reading, he is dyslexic.

I made him dyslexic because I am, and has he hasn't learnt to read well in the movie, were he was isolated as a monster for 12 years...
He hasn't been isolated here, and so lack of exposure isn't he culprit to why he has a problem reading so I went with dyslexia.

Haven't decided if they are dead, or rich enough to living elsewhere and let him stay in the house for school.
As I don't know the story in the original, he was only a prince after all... could be a second son... I donno.
I'm leaning towards dead though, cuz disney.

In the 1991 Disney animated film, I've always figured that, yes, they'd died (since they're never mentioned), and that their deaths were at the root of Prince Adam's the Beast's 'spoiled, selfish and unkind' behaviour; I think that it would have happened just a couple years--2/3-years--before the Enchantress put him, his entire household staff and his castle (which I think would have been his family's country estate (or one of them)) under her curse after he failed his 'test of character' ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hone… & en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamonds… ).
This also makes me wonder; who is/was/would-have-been managing his estate for him 'till he came of age? An Uncle? A cousin? Godparent? A family friend (who wasn't really so faithful/diligent/loyal), who just leaves the prince at his family's country estate (to enjoy the boons of the prince's inheritance), with no governess (or someone who would have had the responsibility of his upbringing, guiding his education, and, likewise, the authority reprimand him if/when he did wrong)? If I'D been the Enchantress; instead of cursing the young prince, firstly I would have made certain that someone was there to preside over his upbringing and correct his behaviour and education 'till he was of age, so that he'd be prepared to assume his throne as a good ruler; THEN I'd have tracked-down the deadbeat legal guardian, and I'd have cursed THEM...
I know that, in the musical, in a conversation between Cogsworth and Lumiere, it's voiced that they were also cursed BECAUSE they'd let him get that bad in the first place; but really, what could they have done, they had no authority over him (he would have just fired/banished them). I also know that Cogsworth was the head of the household, but, still, he would have had no authority over the young prince.
I did ponder over a few ideas I'd had for a sequel (the midquel was rubbish...); interested in hearing them?

Well; in the original fairytale (or, at least Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's and Andrew Lang's respective shortenings ( www.pitt.edu/~dash/beauty.html & www.sacred-texts.com/neu/lfb/b… ) of Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve's original work ( www.amazon.co.uk/Madame-Villen… )), Belle had either 2 or 5 older sisters (Belle/Beauty being the youngest of either 6 or 12 siblings (the children, 3/6 sons and 3/6 daughters, of a now-widowed Gentleman-Merchant)), who are cruel to her (just like Cinderella's step-sisters), while in the Disney film, Belle is an only child; what if, for a sequel, Belle had cousins, who (like the cruel older sisters from the "B&tB" fairytale) were unpleasant and antagonistic towards her.
Alternately, they could just be the daughters of other members of the Ton/High-Society (unrelated to Belle at all): In the original fairytale, when the family was wealthy, they were highly sought-out as people to be publically associated with (even willing to 'befriend' the elder daughters/sisters), but, when Belle's/Beauty's father lost his fortune, they couldn't seem to able to drop their acquaintance with the family fast-enough (rather like what happened in Hans Christian Anderson's "The Tinderbox" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tind… ))--(though many wealthy bachelors were still interested in marrying Belle/Beauty reguardless of her lost dowry). The could have pretended to have befriended her, only to turn on her when her father lost his fortune. The whole 'hansome/pretty exterior hides an ugly interior' metaphor could be futher explored, now that Prince Adam (formally 'the Beast') now knows and understands the difference between virtue and inner-beauty, and one's mere outer-beauty, as they try to lure him away from Belle. Likewise, rival suitors for Belle, this time in the capital city and the royal court, could also be explored.
Also, there was originally talk of a sequel for the 1991 Disney film ( disney.wikia.com/wiki/Gaston#T… ), where Gaston had a younger brother, Avenant (named as a nod to Belle's unwanted suitor from French poet and filmmaker, Jean Cocteau's, 1946 adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast"), who would seek revenge for his brother's demise (and establish himself as superior to Gaston, stepping out of his shadow, once and for all); this idea was, instead, recycled for the "The Little Mermaid" sequel, "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" ( disney.wikia.com/wiki/The_Litt… ), with Morgana, sister to the late Ursula, claiming to be seeking revenge for Ursula's death, but really wanted to succeed where Ursula (their mother's favourite daughter), had failed.
An alternative idea could be if Gaston'd had a rival, arguably smarter then Gaston (a nod to Belle's/Beauty's sisters' husbands from Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's version of the B&tB story ( www.pitt.edu/~dash/beauty.html ); "[Belle's/Beauty's father] sent [for] her sisters, who hastened thither with their husbands. They were both of them very unhappy. The eldest had married a gentleman, extremely handsome indeed, but so fond of his own person, that he was full of nothing but his own dear self, and neglected his wife. The second had married a man of wit, but he only made use of it to plague and torment everybody, and his wife most of all"), from a neighbouring village, who was looking to extend his influence into Gaston's village and take-over, and then setting his sights on claiming the 'trophy wife' Gaston had failed to attain.
What do you think?

1.) The level of detail in this research is more than a little impressive!
2.) I love how in depth this is. The Disney version is very charming but it is not true to the old tales which had so many layers and I think it would be fascinating and entertaining to see something with those same layers of conflict. I am most fascinated by the concept of family that comes out of the woodwork, the antagonistic cousins especially. That Belle and her father were so isolated had always felt like a lose when there could have been so much interesting development through the original siblings or as you pointed out cousins. Also a smarter version of Gaston, even as a sibling, would be interesting to see.

As for the backstory for the prince; have you ever heard of Edward VI of England ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_V… ), or Ivan the Terrible ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_the… )?
Both are cases of when the heir to the throne is orphaned whilst still very young, and, so, grasping noblemen seek more to advance their own interests then in the interests of the domain, backstab each-other to acquire the role for 'Lord-Protector'/'Regent' ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minority… ) for themselves.
I kind-of see this as what happened to the prince; sequestered to a royal Château out in the country with a household staff to look after him, and thus keeping him far, far away from the royal court where the 'regent' could reign without opposition from the young prince. With his parents gone, there's no-one in a position of authority to reign-in his behaviour ("Although he had everything his heart desired, the Prince was spoiled, selfish and unkind").
