Description
When: June 25, 2021
Where: Ouwehands Dierenpark Rhenen, The Netherlands
Time for some tongue action!
Giraffes have some of the coolest tongues - long and blue-purple in color!
If you are an expert on Giraffes, please help me out. The zoo has two types of Giraffe sharing the same habitat I'm 60% positive that it's a Rothschild's and not a Kordofan...
Species: Rothschild’s Giraffe (Rothschildgiraffe)
Latin Name: Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi
Originates from Kenya and Uganda
Current status: Endangered
Did you know:
… The Rothschild’s Giraffe can be distinguished from the Masai Giraffe – which it closely resembles – by it’s pelt. The Rothschild’s is paler, the orange-brown patches are less jagged and sharp in shape and the connective channels a creamier hue.
… The Rothschild always seems to be wearing white stockings – this is because it has no markings on the lower leg.
…It is the only subspecies of Giraff to be born with 5 ossicones. Two of these ar the larger and more obvious bumps on the top of the head – common in all Giraffes. The third can often be seen in the center of the forehead and the other two are behind each ear.
…Rothschild’s are often taller than many of the other subspecies – measuring up to six metres tall, 20 ft.
