Description
When: October 9, 2019
Where: Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Though we're no fans of the sounds of Macaws, I must say, seeing a flock in flight is absolutely beautiful. They had a lot of different kinds flying together, and they all have their own perch.
This one sat alone, making me quite happy since we don't often see this kind
Species: Military Macaw (Soldatenara)
Latin name: Ara Militaris Mexicana
Originates from the forests of Mexico and South America.
Current status: Vulnerable
Did you know:
…Their name is derived from their predominantly green plumage, which resembles a military parade uniform.
…Of the different subspecies, the Mexicana is the largest.
…They are difficult to tell apart from the Great Green Macaw in looks. Military Macaw are, however, smaller, darker in color, and have a completely black beak.
…Military Macaws are considered vulnerable in the wild, but they are common in the pet industry.
