Description
When: May 23, 2022
Where: Landgoed Hoenderdaell Anna Paulowna, the Netherlands
They have a pair of these Vultures, and this year for the first time they successfully hatched an egg. However, they were not able to properly care for it and zoo keepers took over.
The care team really put in a lot of effort, even fabricating a semi-realistic glove looking like a King Vulture's head to feed the chick. Sadly, it did not survive.
You live and learn, which is often the case with animal parents (and zoos/ zoo keepers). Hopefully, next year will bring another egg, and we can only hope the chick will be raised succesfully.
Species: King Vulture (Koningsgier)
Latin name: Sarcoramphus Papa
Originates from Central and South America.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The King Vulture is the only surviving member of the Sarcoramphus genus, although fossil members are known.
…Its closest still living relative is the Andean Condor.
…It may derive his name of “King” from his habit of displacing smaller Vultures from a carcass and eating its fill while they wait, while others say the name is derived from the Mayan Legends, in which the bird was a king who served as a messenger between humans and gods.
