not ugly. Absolutely stunning creatures. And this is one of the best photos I've ever seen of one. Most don't do them justice.
My local zoo had one for a few months... he was missing most of his toes, I suspect either rescued or frostbite- or both...
The way our zoo's big bird aviaries were set up, you used to be able to get close to a few of the cage bars. The zoo also does a Halloween costume party thing, and I was dressed up as a red-tailed hawk the year he was there. I passed small sticks to him through the chain link and he took them ever so gently. He and I sat near each other for almost an hour before mom made me go. I wanted to cuddle him.
