Description Photo taken in June, 2016 @ Gaia Zoo, The Netherlands

Did you know female, and young, Wood Ducks and Mandarin Ducks look very similar?
A week or so after our visit to the zoo, they shared a photo of the ducklings - one of whom you see here - and told a rather funny story to go with it.
The female Wood Duck had built a nest and laid a couple of eggs.
The female Mandarin Duck apparently didn't feel like building a nest of her own, plopped onto Woody's, laid her eggs, and hopped off again. Therefore, Woody is now raising a brood of mixed duckings
We tried to discern them from the photos we'd taken, but it's pretty hard to tell. Still, they're all rather pretty

Species: Wood Duck (Carolina eend)

Latin name: Aix Sponsa

Originates from North America.

Current status: Least Concern

Aw so cute to watch I bet
The ponds we have where I could see lots of ducks
have now so many weeds and cattails (overgrown)
I can no longer see them so well to photograph
So enjoying yours

Oh wow, you can see them in the wild? We don't have many ducks around in the park here anymore - we used to go and feed them, but then they just disappeared They're slowly coming back now, though I haven't seen a duckling in years there.

I have one more of just a few of the ducklings lined up
