Description Alright, here's Sketch no. 2 out of my latest Chainsketch challenge...this time the lucky recipient of the no. 2 spot is who requested a pic of his beloved OC Anoka the Barbarian. I know that Anoka is one of *JonKin 's oldest characters, however compared some of his other OC's such as Jabberwok, Inez Moreno, ninja catgirl Yomiko, etc...I don't know much about her. I do know that she's a strong, fierce warrior that likes to wield a mighty axe, although she's a big buff gal that she does have a sensual, feminine side, and I know that she has a lot of hair! Johnny (Jonkin) just recently revamped her design and her hairstyle to make her hair look more natural and gave her a nice, full, natural hairstyle that was to look like a popular female wrestler in the WWE now. [link] For Johnny's sake, I won't mention her name, b/c as soon as he gave Anoka the hairstyle that he got from said WWE Diva, she straightened out her naturally curly Middle Eastern locks that she was given from birth! [link] She still looks good though!

As for the actual drawing here, I'm pleased for the most part with it. I kinda messed up her top, but didn't catch this until after I already scanned it. I almost overdid it with the shading, until I discovered a new technique which oddly enough included the use of my eraser! The eraser that I use is an eraser pen, so I used it like I would the pencil and lightly smeared the shaded areas to create a nice darker look. I'm still trying to get this shading/highlighting thing down, so please bear with me. Speaking of highlights...all that I really highlighted was her hair! And for that hair, I used a photo reference of one of my favorite singers, the talented and beautiful Nikka Costa!!! [link]

I hope that Johnny is pleased with my rendition of Anoka! If you want to see more Anoka done by her creator and owner here's she is at 's gallery [link] Being that we agreed to each other's chainsketch, I asked Johnny to see my gal Angie...not only did he do Angie, but he decked her out in some sexy Carolina Panthers gear! [link]

Up next to receive a Chainsketch...the awesomely talented and utterly amazing wants to see a pic of his OC Genica! Stay tuned buoys and gulls!

Well, here's another fave for ya! It IS indeed well drawn! Hair is great too.

As to her right arm (our left), I tried that in a mirror with myself. It IS possible to see the bicep like that but it is a strain. It COULD be said she posed that way for the sake of the pose (to show off those awesome arms!). But it wouldn't have been easy.

And thank you for the faves!

And I'm sure that the anatomy is off a bit on this one...I took the pose from a model in a fitness model bikini magazine. As far as I can remember, I tried to draw her in the same position as the model was in the original picture.

I like this one because it shows an improving understanding of anatomy

Thanks! I actually used a photo reference from a magazine that featured fitness models in bikinis...the gal in the photo was well defined and when I drew this I just basically added more muscle to Anoka. I'm glad that you like it!

Thanks man...thanks for the fave as well!

I checked my gallery stats today and discovered that this is my most view deviation...I'm trying to figure out what is it about this one that makes people wanna look verses the rest of my stuff.

hmm..that is a very interesting stat indeed. Perhaps it is the fantasy wild hair that is uncommon in real life that attracts so many - itwas the first thing i noticed.

this sows how lame i am....i love the term 'chainsketch' just wasnt aquainted with the term! yeesh...
tight sketch, man....you know how they say int the Artists Way......even if you dont feel it, draw at least 15 minutes a day...its like working out for the drawing muscle...!

Mr-Marcus-81 In reply to theEvilTwin [2008-11-18 19:20:14 +0000 UTC]

You're not lame...this chainsketch refers to responding to something different. Basically, it's like a chain letter; someone starts a chainsketch by offering a specific number of spots to other people to sketch them something of their choice (usually about 5-10 spots). The catch is, whoever would like to receive a sketch must agree to offer the same amount of slots in their journal, and so on and so forth. This is the second chainsketch that I've been a part of and I must say, it's pretty fun and challenging. It helps you to step outside of your comfort zone and try something that maybe you wouldn't normally try drawing.

It's funny for me also, is that I really don't have a sketch style...as I'm too anal for sketching! I like my lines really clean and precise and the extra scribbles from sketching really irk me when it comes to my own work. This piece actually took me about a few hours between a two day period...I kept getting distracted!

As for the chainsketching that you were talking about, I need to implement some sort of daily drawing regime to develop my skills, even if it's for only 15 minutes a day! I'm gonna start alloting myself time to do that! Thanks for the idea! Thanks for commenting as well!

Wow, her muscles look really dense: especially her torso. Her left arm looks better than her right one. You do that funny thing almost always, when there is an outward rotation. The biceps seems distorted then somehow (in an unnatural way). In this case (with her hands on her thighs) it would be impossible to turn the upper arm to the outside. (Try it yourself!) But this is how it looks.

Mr-Marcus-81 In reply to plinius [2008-11-17 17:25:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...Anoka's a hard body! Yeah, I know...I don't like how that right arm came out either. I used a photo ref. and had trouble trying to get the correct proportions of that arm that was slightly hidden behind her on that side. Plus, I have this really bad habit of drawing one body part on one side asymmetrical to the same body part on the opposite side of the page. When I'm done with all of these chainsketches and other things that I owe people, I'm gonna go back and practice some drawing basics such as anatomy, muscle groups, proportions, symmetry, shading/shadows/highlights, etc.

Thanks for the comment and the fave!

Awesome work, Marc. I like damn near everything about the body. The I think that the shading of the arm is a bit off (is the light source coming from her left?), bit that's just nitpicking on my part. I like the detail you put in the various muscles, espically the abs. Her hair doesn't look exactly like Ms L's, at least you drew detail in it. I normally say," To hell with it!" and just draw the outline. Anyway, great job on this sketch, my friend. Keep at the sketchin'!

Thanks Johnny, I'm glad that you're pleased with the way she came out. With the shading, I had to salvage it as I got a little too shade happy...originally it was much darker than this on her left side. I used a photo ref. and in the photo the light (It was natural sunlight) was coming in from the right side and the sun was setting, however it was a little tricky for me to nail down the exact shadows and such. Yeah, that's part of the reason why I'm trying to implement more shading into my work now, b/c that's something that I should have been doing all along yet I still have trouble with it. Practice makes perfect, right?

I'm glad that you dig how her body/muscle anatomy came out. I noticed that although Noka is buff, she's not super buff and has lots of feminine curves. I had a bit of trouble with her right arm, but I did the best of what I could with it. Personally, I love how her face came out...I was wondering her age though...as I made her look pretty young (early/mid 20's). Plus, being a barbarian I would imagine that she would have a bit more character to her face as well. I wish that I would've made her proportions smaller, as I would've liked to take a shot at drawing her dope boots. And for her hair...I know that you would like to pattern her hair off of Ms. L's...but I've NEVER been able to effectively draw thick curly hair. Besides, the newer style that you gave her looks like it's just really thick and full verses curly...it reminded me of Nikka Costa's hair (see link above) and that's what I used to get a general idea for the volume of her full head of hair!

Thanks again for the kudos and the fave! I'm glad that you're pleased with her. I may have to go back and color this one day!

Practice does indeed make perfect, Marc. You did a great job with the shading thus far. Anoka isn't really all that buff. She's more cut than anything else compared to her original look, where she was swoll as all hell. She's in her mid 30's, and based on her lifestyle, she should have a few scars or something, though I don't know how I'm gonna implment that in her design. As for Nok's hair, I intended it to be full and someone curly, ala Ms L, or Corbin Bleu (that High School Muscial dude w/ the 'fro. Hey, maybe if HSM shows up in the ATL, you should audiction. Based off your pictures of yourself, you look similar enough. I'm getting off track though). You may have noticed that I do not tend to render hair (something else I need to work on), so the curly texture isn't apparent. It looks like a big thick red bush, but that's my fault. I still like your version!

Mr-Marcus-81 In reply to JonKin [2008-11-17 21:42:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks with the shading. Although I almost overdid it on this sketch, I am glad with the new technique that I discovered by taking my eraser pen and lightly smudging the page to create a shading effect. It's gonna take me some more time to play with it and shading in general, but I'll get there one day!

Anoka was fun to do, but like I said in my comment I know that she's one of your oldest, nearest, and dearest characters of yours; yet I don't know as much about her as I do your other characters. She definitely doesn't look like she's in her mid 30's the way I drew her...perhaps this is a pic of her back in her younger days? Or maybe she just keeps up really well...I dunno! Being that she's a barbarian is she in the past, modern day and just living in the wilderness, or is she from another dimention? Is she black, white, or other? What's her M.O....why is she a barbarian...how did she become a barbarian? I'm just interested, as you've always given the backstories of your other gals, but you don't have much written in any of your postings of Anoka.

Yeah...maybe I should give it some practice, but I definitely can't draw Ms. L or Corbin Bleu's grade of hair! (BTW yes, I do know who Corbin Bleu is...with as much High School Musical shit that my job at the bookstore used to carry! If they roll through here, I could give it a shot...although I'm starting to lose my youthful looks! ) I tried to curl up a few of her ends here, but it still reads more bushy than curly. Honestly, I love how her hair came out!

You know, you're right about Anoka not having much of a backstory. I mean, I usually have such fleshed out stories for Inez, Jabber, and Yommie, so a reader knows how they came to be how they are. I'll have to post her motivation, stats, etc. sometimes this week. Thanks, Marcus, you've gave me something to think about!
