Whereas the Unicorn Magic is refined, pure, and restrictive of form. The Elkines' Magic stems from nature itself: the very power that commands the design of the wild Everfree Forest that they've called their home. Where the Unicorn or Earth Pony would easily clear the land to create a house, the Β Elkine would naturally "grow" their homes and massive cities to interweave with the natural flora and fauna that makes it up in its entirety, allowing them to bypass a number of spell limits that the Ponies possess. One such spell involves a voluntary shift of self between the waking and realm of slumber to dodge an incoming attack and teleporting in a flurry of leaves that form together to create an intricate doppelganger of its caster while still maintaining the physical capabilities and strength as though it were the real.

These are my own musings, and it's just the tip of the iceberg for the Elkine Emipre of ancient times. A vast and widely unknown secluded national superpower that dates the first moments of the Alogan Triumvirate at taking place during the 12th Age (The Alogan Triumvirate was the established meeting that would breed the uneasy alliance betwixt the Unicorn, Pegasi, and Earth Pony Tribes to the Northeastern ranges. An alliance that was doomed to devastate the nation of Alogo for all time, transforming it into the Frozen Wastelands). At this point, the Elkine Empire as a whole consisted of the Elkine, Caribou, and Bison Clans, each of the Clans held sway over a certain aspect of power, but all of them worshipped Theial'Sha: the Motherly Left Eye, their personification of the moon in spiritual form, andΒ Solan'She The Lesser, the younger and jealous sibling to Theial'Sha, the Fatherly Right Eye as he was also known, a vengeful god known to scorch and char all within his glaring sight according to the Bisons.

Very nice! You have a very interesting lore! Do you plan on making it into fic or comic?

And thus, new headcanon was formed.
The way I see it now, Unicorns are like Wizards, where Deer are like Druids.

Also, this pic has caused me to start looking into every possible pony-esque race (Deer, Giraffe, Camel, etc.) to try and develop headcanon for them.
I'm debating whether this is a good thing or a bad thing.
...probably bad, since I should be working on my finals.
...screw it, HEADCANON AWAITS!!!!!

LOL Well, the inspiration for this picture for me came from the fanfic "It's a dangerous business going out your door"Β www.equestriadaily.com/2011/04β¦
It highlights deer and pronghorn (as well as Earth Pony magic). It's pretty good. You should give it a read if you have the time.
Also, that fic got me to thinking about other types of pony-esque races as well. Such as the Orix. I even drew a picture of what I think it could look like lol fav.me/d6monfu
Also again, I've even thought of other creatures with horns/antlers/tusks such as elephants or a narwhal

The notion of deer being magical interests me, but there would be some complications beyond antler loss and regrowth. For example in most ungulate species, antlers are a male-only thing, and in most of the rest, females' antlers are much smaller than males'. I wonder what that sort of inherent power imbalance would do to a society. Also, what about cows, minotaurs, and goats, which all have horns and have made nonmagical appearances in canon?

Except that they fall off every winter and regrow 3 months later. What then?
