Well done mate! Have you tried fusion 360? I have started to learn how to model with it, and I bet that it's right up your alley.

Yup I think so. It's a quad based program, and from the little I have tried it, and all of the tutorials I've seen so far it doesn't look like too much of a transition from Sketchup. It is first and foremost a real world model program, and not for film/games but I think models can be exported to most other programs, and it's very good at making curves, fillets etc.
Check this guy out, he's made the gun and armour with fusion 360.
