I'm thinking of a FAMAS-like rifle that takes 8mm Lebel, you could take any artistic liberties you want but, do you think you would like to try and pull it off?

it's a bit of an outdated round for a more modern gun, perhaps there's another heavily tapering cartridge that's similar and more modern? I'm not opposed to alternative rounds, but perhaps something more modern like the 7.62x39 would be more feasible

Definitely, that's why I wanted the 8mm Lebel, it was the classic French cartridge and it could be updated in ballistic technology quite easily as the AS VAL exists and it shoots 9x39mm (A larger round than the 8x50mm) which essentially is just a necked-expanded 7.62x39. I mean, they probably would've done it if NATO standards didn't incorporate the 5.56x45 and 7.62x51. I kind of want to make a bit of a series out of it perhaps, like if after WW2 they didn't adopt the NATO rounds.
