Description When people ask me who my favorite author is, without the slightest hesitation I can tell them that it is John Steinbeck. His writing is simple, of the earth, and yet it manages to expose the pure beauty of the human spirit. One of my favorite passages of his is Chapter 15 of The Grapes of Wrath. It is a story of a waitress learning to look past her prejudices and showing kindness to a poor migrant family. If you haven't read the book, I urge you to at least read that chapter (it stands on its own, almost like an essay, so no context is needed).

This is a portrait of Steinbeck, entirely done with deviantART muro 's new text brush using Chapter 15 of The Grapes of Wrath.

For reference I used a famous photo, but I cannot track down who the original photographer is. The image is owned by Getty Images.

Travels with Charlie is a fun book coupled with an interesting point in history.

What kind of a site is it? Β Is it commercial (do you make money in any way from it)?

I'm a writer, and I’ll sell my books on this site. Unfortunately, this site (booksfrom.me) is still in development, so I can’t show you how it will looks right now, but I'll try to describe how I want use your portrait:
on a white brick wall will hanging portraits (not only your portrait, as well as works by other authors). This will be the background for my site - an art gallery. I'm not going to change your portrait, it will be the same as in the original.

Oh thanks! Β If you put a link to deviantART muro (or mention that is how it was made) that would be great. Β I am more proud of my involvement creating dA muro than I am of any other personal sites.

Wow, this is impressive... I can't imagine how much time it took to do all of that... (And ironically, I just bought one of Steinbeck's books two hours ago... Lol.)

Thanks! It actually did not take me too long (probably 1 or 2 hours). But, one of my hobbies is to draw people that I see in coffee shops and whatnot, so I am used to drawing portraits really fast.

Which Steinbeck book did you get?

Wow, that is fast. And quite the hobby too. Lol.

I got "The Pearl". I haven't had a chance to read it, but it was recommended to me by my mother. I've also read "Of Mice and Men", and I enjoyed that story (although the ending was sad...).

Ah the Pearl is pretty good, though also quite sad. You should read Cannery Row or Tortilla Flat afterwards just for contrast (they are much more light hearted).

Alright, I'll be sure to take a look at those. Thanks for the suggestions!

That is excellent work! I have never read any of Steinbeck's work. This makes me interested in trying Grapes of Wrath.

Oh, you should definitely try some out. Grapes of Wrath is good if you are in the mood for a pretty heavy read. If you want something on the lighter side, you can't go wrong with Cannery Row.
