Description My forth commission for and it was a doozie. As you could have guessed, I'm not very experienced in multiple light sources, but This was probably still my boldest practice in it since... well, I guess I've never done any practice on light sources quite like this one. If I had a premium membership I would love a proper critique, but I would love to hear other's thorough criticisms on this none-the-less.

OC's featured from left to right are: Contra Posta (My OC), Plushberry ( 's), Ignite (as requested by Lapqmzla), and Babyhamut (My little brother's OC).

I've only seen glassblowing once; it looked tricky. Now for critique... I'll focus on the background first, then move onto fore; a lot of detail, both in the composition and the use of perspective detail. The effect this gives works well with the heavy use of lighting and shading, with the gives the entirety a lot more depth, both in perspective and detail. The details you've also used in the bricks and furnaces, from the coloring to markings are also varied. It shows you've tried to add some variety instead of just blanching it with a single color or repeating pattern.

Now for the foreground; the linework is clean on the each of the characters, who each have some variation of accessory as well as expression. The same said detail can also be applied to the fused glass in the center; the coloring used on the cooler end near the blowpipe gives a steady transition from white hot to cooling and in turn hardening. The tools in the foreground also work in giving the scene more detail, as well as showing the process of glass fusing. However, while using a dragon in place of a kiln is a good idea, and works well in the context of the piece, my only complaint is that Babyhaumt's flame is somewhat hard to distinguish at the end where it impacts the glass; the detail is there but it is hard to see. That aside, there is a great amount of detail for each of the characters and their actions; I do like the pose you gave Babyhaunt, especially how his claws wrap around the platform he's on. The camera Ignite is holding also holds a lot of detail, mostly in how it interacts the the various light sources.

Final verdict; a highly detailed piece with a strong emphasis on color, lighting, and detail of both environment and characters in both linework and expression. My final thoughts are questioning how a pony could do any of this without the use of opposable thumbs, and why this piece isn't more widely recognized.

Overall, fantastic piece

So, yeah. Sorry for the impromptu critique. Second one I've done without the actual feature Hope this can be of some relevance to you, and I hope it gets more recognition in the future.

"my only complaint is that Babyhaumt's flame is somewhat hard to distinguish at the end where it impacts the glass; the detail is there but it is hard to see."

while i agree that it is difficult to see the detail in the flames, i think that that is perfect, because when you are trying to work with the glass, if you torch it with a hot flame, it is basically impossible to see the flame if you dont have dark glasses on.
so, while the detail is somewwhat overwhelmed by the light, thats exactly what happens when youre doing it irl, he captured the effect perfectly

Oh wow, thank you so much for being the first to give me a full blown critique on this piece. Having done so myself a time ago, I understand that it is a little more difficult to organize your thoughts without it. I'm glad you liked it, but being a commission I didn't really do it for the

It's probably because the only one's who will see this are those that come across it through watching me already or follow one of the few groups this is featured in. It was a good practice in working with light, especially in my anti-undo button of a medium. Thank you for pointing out the obscurity of the flames which I kind of figured would happen after I applied the paint, but didn't really bank on loosing all distinction. Despite how proud I am of nailing the lighting from harsh sources like open flames or glass kiln, I admit that I haven't figured how to approach flames in an artistic or aesthetic approach. after the scan, it started to look like burning magnesium like an underwater flare.
The only explanation I could possibly give for ponies doing anything in this scene without opposable thumbs is my inability to come up with a means of plausible grip outside of adding a lot more detailed equipment like straps or ropes for obvious support. Now that you mention it, the only one that I have in this piece that does have thumbs isn't utilizing them while the characters that need it to function in this piece don't have them.

Yeah, I'm on-board with this cooperative portrayal of ponies and dragons. Despite the established—and admittedly intriguing—antipathy between the two species, the scene here is a practical demonstration of the possibilities resulting from a friendlier, more collaborative coexistence.

The lighting looks great, by the way—at least to my untrained eye. Well done. (Although how those ponies can work while so exposed to that inferno is beyond me.)

god, to be honest im not sure how we can do it either, the damn thing is 2100 degrees, and we're standing there with little to no protection at all

I'm glad you like it, and I appreciate your take on the subject. I always thought it was weird that Spike being a thick scaled, educated, magicfire-breathing Dragon didn't really have much depicted of him using his abilities and attributes in the show.

As far as the invulnerability of the characters in the scene; I prefer to chalk it up to candy colored ponies existing in a fantasy world where magical fire is constructive, not destructive.

ContinuityCheck In reply to Muffyn-Man [2014-12-07 01:51:43 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I hadn't considered that. Now that you mention it, it's certainly conceivable that dragons can regulate the properties of their own fire.

Yeah, its something that I mulled over since the second season between Dragon Quest and Secret of My Excess. And if that fails theres always the fact that some individuals get used to harsh environments after being exposed to it enough. I certainly hope that Spike's involvement in the series improves in Season 5 since his involvement was nothing more than tail-ends of schadenfreude comedy in season 4.

ContinuityCheck In reply to Muffyn-Man [2014-12-07 06:57:49 +0000 UTC]

Glad to know I'm not alone in my appreciation of Spike. Proportionately to his screen time, he's easily the most under-exploited character in the series.

I don't think we're the only one's in that regard. Honestly it really depends on who's going to be on the writing staff for this season, as to wheather we will get any more of a properly fleshed out Spike episode. fingers crossed

Wow dude, just wow, you weren't kidding about the amount of light in this piece haha the brews are on me tonight, holy shitzu

Muffyn-Man In reply to Eastbeastfilms [2014-12-06 04:42:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this was probably my most ambitious piece thus far. I didn't even make a brushstroke without considering how the light would hit a surface, so it took me forever to figure out how to blend everything while making sure that the general color of a character stood out against some really strong light sources.

Save your money, we can break open a barrel after Elo happens.

I don't remember that being in any anthology.  It's the song Chuck is most famous for.  I wish I knew how to link directly to specific times in YouTube.  It would save people from having to sit through the boring parts.

As for your name, I first heard that on 'Bongo Fury'.  The lyrics are so funny that Frank himself can't keep from laughing.

I don't care what the uploader claims.  This is from 'Bongo Fury', a live album.

It was played during an Anthologies clip where they used the season 3 premier scene of Pinkie playing the flugelhorn.

It's a good thing I wrote "I don't remember it there" as opposed to "It's not there".

Now I am only slightly embarrassed.

--------

Do you think you could crop your pic and rename it "Chuck Manpone plays "Feels So Good" on the Flugelhorn"?
