Description This was inspired by this gorgeous piece [link] written by the insanely talented Michael Wesely. (He's on Tumblr here [link] . If you haven't heard him sing, please pay a visit to his Sound Cloud. He's amazing.)

I just loved the haunting, introspective nature of Michael's piece, and so I wanted to echo that feeling in this drawing. I always imagine Erik having this lingering air of melancholy and intense sorrow, regardless of his mood. Understandably so, I suppose, given what he's lived through. But I also think that that sorrow fuels him somehow, drives him to inspiration in quiet moments like this. For whatever reason, I've found that sadness is an enormous source of inspiration. It's a very profound emotion, and almost beautiful, in a way, because it makes you appreciate happiness that much more. I'm sure that was the case with Erik. He was acutely aware of what happiness should be because he had never known anything but unhappiness. I think Erik's entire life was an Ode to Melancholy--an ode because it really was exquisitely crafted, if you think about it. His story isn't a pleasant one, but in the end, beautiful things came from it. All of his suffering culminated into greatness. Kind of a nice thought.

The Phantom of the Opera belongs to Gaston Leroux.
Erik's Sonata belongs to Michael Wesely.

A perfectly dark picture with Erik's melancholic sorrowful mood. The piano is just like a photo. It is so amazing. The whole picture is just a masterpiece.Β

I am completely awed by your artwork.Β Whenever I come to see Phantom of the Opera (And let's be honest,Β GOOD Christine and Erik fanart), this is the place I alwaysΒ come to. I have visited your gallery for a many years now, and I am stillΒ utterly in love with your depiction of these characters. It's to the point where I associate this styleΒ as the 'true' POTO style. (side note) I just sat staring at this image listening to the Michael Wesely's piece for 4 minutes straight.Β

Β

Please, don't stop drawing these pieces. You are an incredible artist who conveys so many emotions and feelings in just one picture that I very nearly cry. I've never written aΒ comment to you before (at least I don't remember) of your talent, but please know that it is much appreciated.

Β

Erik and Christine would not be so amazing without you.

Β

Thank you.

Out of all the POTO fanart I've ever seen, yours is the best. Not only do you draw beautifully, you also capture every characters personality true to the original. Magnifique!

Anyways, I'm looking forward to more of your drawings and art

Although I'm not familiar with Michael Wesely (will have to check him out!), I can imagine that he must be pretty good because this amazing piece echos his music. I absolutely LOVE the mood you've captured and the use of black and white to capture it. It's very emotionally moving. Well done!

Despite what I just said about loving your colored pieces, the black and white really adds to the mood here. You capture the essence of Erik perfectly.
