Description Foals by Cat, the traveling stallion with the winning smile.

Cat can be seen here: [link]

I'll be updating this as I get more of the colts and fillies colored.

So far we have a claybank dun leopard, a bright chestnut blanket, and a black snowflake. The snowflake filly might be one of Horse's foals - the black charger ridden by Sunset the elf, whose adventures are so ably told by .

Updated to add foal #4, a black-bay leopard,
foal 5, a buckskin snowcap, and
foal 6, a red roan few-spot.

No points required - all you need to do is make a pic of your mare and Cat and a pic of the foal. He always makes appy foals.

No, these are not up for adoption, sorry. They're just foals of their sire Cat. Cat is available for breeding if you want to design a foal of your own.

Are any of these adoptables? I've kinda fallen in love with leopard appy (I know I will regret saying this, as I'm drowning in pictures I have to do)

Do you mean the #3, the black-bay leopard? I don't mind if you do one like him (or her) and adopt him. I'd love to see your version.

Thank you very much. That one is named Frost - I guess I really do need to make individual sheets for them. Frost and the red dun leopard Teekee feature in some fun cartoons and a short manga I made last month.

gasp! Appaloosas!!!!!!!!!

Of course I have to say the black snowflake is the awesomest because my real horse is a snowflake but I looove the bay leopard!!! All these designs are amazing!!!

Murasaki99 In reply to BrindleTail [2008-11-24 05:51:52 +0000 UTC]

Appie madness! Lots of spots.

You've got a snowflake appy? That's very cool! Is it black or another base color? Snowflake looks so pretty on the darker coats and red chestnut.

Leopard apps come in some eye-popping patterns. I'm taking inspiration from real horses, although I'm having fun with the base colors.

BrindleTail In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-11-26 23:57:11 +0000 UTC]

Yep! He's a red chestnut with really dark mane and a two-tone tail XDDD [link]

Leopards are fun!! I'd make a leopard OC, but I don't have enough patience for each spot XD

Lemme guess... the leopard is the talker, the chestnut generates the stinking cloud...

Seriously, though. Very pretty. I like the shiny highlights on the snowflake appy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-11-22 15:44:04 +0000 UTC]

How'd you guess?

I'm still learning the highlights-thing. It can really make a horse look 3D when done right. I won't tweak the highlights any more until I am finished with the base colors and spots.

I'm trying a technique where I put the base color on one layer and the white areas on another. So the claybank is a fully-painted claybank with a white overlay, then I used the eraser tool to make the spots through the white. I'm liking the effect.

Diinzumo In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-11-22 17:28:43 +0000 UTC]

I was a really good guess.

Sounds like the base color idea's working out, especially when dealing with blanket spots.

There's something going on with the pattern on the chestnut that has me thinking of another Cryxian-type horse pattern.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-11-23 02:00:53 +0000 UTC]

The chestnut's spot pattern was inspired by the markings on a real horse - it could almost look skull-like if I fiddled with it a bit more. Not sure the filly would want that, though.

As if pinto and appy aren't complicated enough, have you heard of the Pintaloosa? Appy spots overlaid over a pinto horse!! And it has just occurred to me there may be one produced in the IK eventually.

Diinzumo In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-11-23 08:18:10 +0000 UTC]

Never heard of the Pintoloosa, but that wouldn't surprise me in the least.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-11-24 05:11:36 +0000 UTC]

They seem to be fairly rare, since the various color registries don't much like the thought of blending the two, but I found a couple nice photo-examples on the web, and a breed registry with photos here [link]

Diinzumo In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-11-24 12:50:27 +0000 UTC]

That's a fascinating set of colors on that horse in the photo.

Isn't she neat? Leopard appy spots on a blue roan tobiano pinto, I think. Very impressive.

Murasaki99 In reply to FlareAndIcicle [2008-11-22 15:40:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! They aren't finished yet, but I'm having a lot of fun laying out colors and patterns. These three are about an hour's worth of speed-painting.

I think I want the chestnut brighter - not sure if that means more golden-yellow, or more red in her coat.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FlareAndIcicle In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-11-22 21:55:55 +0000 UTC]

I think I'd try more red (and maybe purplish) on the shades, more yellow in the mediums and maybe some very light and desaturated cyan for the highlights...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murasaki99 In reply to FlareAndIcicle [2008-11-23 01:57:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I'll give all that a try! I tend to forget that touches of complementary colors and things like the purples can help to define the color.

FlareAndIcicle In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-11-23 19:04:50 +0000 UTC]

Ohh, the chestnut looks so much better already! And I love the roan one! I'm starting to get a thing for roans and duns, lately

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murasaki99 In reply to FlareAndIcicle [2008-11-23 23:17:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I'll probably add a few more tweaks, but I'm happier with it. Thanks again for the tips.

I love roans, I had a half-Quarter Horse mare that was a red roan Tobiano. Roans are fun. Duns are pretty, too and neat to try and color.

Murasaki99 In reply to FlareAndIcicle [2008-11-24 17:34:52 +0000 UTC]

I should try a batch with "flat coloring", just for fun, or maybe really simple cell-type shading with a limited palette to see how it looks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FlareAndIcicle In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-11-24 21:12:33 +0000 UTC]

Uhuh, you could try I somehow am unable to cell-shade for some reason...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Murasaki99 In reply to FlareAndIcicle [2008-11-25 04:28:06 +0000 UTC]

I used to do a type of cell-shading back when I didn't know much about coloring with a graphic program and before I had a tablet. It was very simplistic, but it could look cool.

FlareAndIcicle In reply to Murasaki99 [2008-11-25 09:21:38 +0000 UTC]

I do like the look cell-shading gives, I just have a sorta cell-shading 'block' in my brain
