"If you want a show about an androgynous-orphan-magicical-whatever then make that show - don't co-op She-ra."
Totally this! I saw the show and is totally great, but I wish it wouldn't try to being She-Ra, for the simple fact that the characters have 0 relationships with their original counterparts, and it keeps adding new and original characters that aren't even related to Eternia.
And I must say I love your designs! I really love the third one! That's a good way to keep the She-Ra atributes and even make a difference from the original one!

Oh thanks so much.. Yes, I don't like reboots in general but this one in particular was annoying. I mean the show runner has all these awards and accolades and I'm like 'if she wanted a show she should be able to get one with actual original characters without using She-ra as a jumping off point. It seems like she didn't really want to do She-ra but it's what they offered so now she has to shoe horn her 'original ideas' into She-ra but the outcome is very meh...

VeryΒ so very much in the same boat as you - I adored the other redesigns but She-Ra's outfit has me cringing - the only time I wore white shorts and a skirt were on sports day in Catholic school and it was always the worst.
Your redesign is fab, I love the first and the third (tho the roman tights+ the red from the third would be my ideal - the chest piece makes me wonder about maneuverability though, perhaps gold plates or padding on top of a red under layer. Really like the shoulder designs, though I'm not a huge fan of cap sleeves. Overall your work just has me wishing she'll get an upgrade costume-wise next season. Those shoulder-pads, argh.
Great job!

Thanks so much! I actually did used to wear skirts and shorts together but they were called 'skorts' (it's basically a skirt in front and a shorts in the back) and if her costume was that it would look way better. But those shorts are just so boxy and not the right length. I'm not a fan of cap sleeves either but I was trying to keep with the design and have her arms out - it seemed like the original really wanted that to happen. I was saying in another comment that I'm surprised that this was what was agreed on when the other characters got updated and She-ra is left with old anime shoulder spikes.

I really really like this, especially the first one. I can visualize an intense battle and seeing that thing wave all cool-like. I do agree with you with the she-ra redesign, I feel it doesn't look good. I like every other character redesign except for hers. It just seems a bunch of odd combinations to me. I'm also with you, she doesn't have to be sexualized, just make her costume look cool. If you wanted to make her into a tomboy, go for it, don't wimp out and give us an awkward Sailor moon type design. Just make things that make sense, that is why I like your first one a lot, it is one hell of a design!

Thanks so much! Yes, I hated the mix match old anime features that her design was. I looked at the other characters and no one on the show has such huge awkward shoulder pads but her. Its weird that that was what everyone running the show agreed on. How was THAT the best they came up with?Β
What irks me is that I watched this little animated series about Spider Gwen and it features way better design/body types than this and I'm wondering why this great looking Spider Gwen didn't get a whole series but this did.

I feel like as an artist and someone that wants to make his own worlds in the future, that the designs should make sense in that world. If the shoulder pads or other designs were similar or some way connected to make sense in that universe then I would have a problem. But she-ra sticks out like a sore thumb. For example, we have the classic Superman look for heroes, heroines, and villians. But Powergirl comes along an changes things up, she looks different , but she still looks likes she belongs in that world. Or even the classic She-ra, she looked different from the whole cast of characters, but she still looked like she belonged in that world. Its just odd design choices, literally no one on the show has nothing like she-ra, like putting a spaceman in the stone age.

Yeah lined up with the other princesses she looks clunky and out of place. It's like a heavily inked character next to one that has no outlines - yes! She sticks out in a bad way.Β

You did a wayy better job than the people working on the She-ra reboot right now. Your design gives a better warrior aesthetic while looking fairly simple enough to animate it. I personally love the third one the most, you are extremely talented!

for the love of all fuck, why do you people have such a hatred of a simple design? and why do you people latch on hating her look because you think she looks androgynous? What's wrong with androgyny? Also, I'm calling bullshit on the original being targeted for the 13-18 demo when its more probable for the 7-12 because it was only a toy commercial.Β Β

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! You don't know how much that pisses me off (and these people seriously need to realize that not all girls have developed breast, so it is really stupid to call reboot She-ra a boy)

What exactly do you mean by 'you people'? Cause I'm not a fanboy, I'm a character artist. You clearly didn't look through my gallery before jumping down my throat. Cause it's part of my career to design characters - across the board, no matter their perceived orientation or body type. I get that simplistic designs are better for animation - all I'm saying here is that if you 'update' a character you can make them look however you want. I didn't like her outfit, so I redrew it.
Did you miss the part where I said I didn't hate the androgynous look? If you did I'll say it again - I do NOT hate that she's more athletic or androgynous. I can already tell you are taking this the wrong way. I have no problem with her body type.Β I said I didn't like the OUTFIT. Particularly the shoulder spikes, shorts and cape.Β Did I give her big balloon breasts? No. Did I give her breasts at all? No.Β Β
You also missed the part where I said if you don't like please don't attack me. I just did this for fun - please do not make a Federal case about this because I don't like shoulder spikes. It's not bullshit that the original was for teens - action cartoons are for 13-18 because they have violence and fighting. You're right that they are marketing ploys but what TV show isn't?
I explain this better in my video of this redraw, please watch it:Β youtu.be/en4mV3q8jdo

Agreeing with this idea, though I'd go a little farther and say the red should be down to the knees instead of kept so short. Wouldn't change a thing about the top half though, it's fantastic!
