my desire for more gorgeous pelts has never been so high
edit: oops i forgot taxidermy is a wobbly subject. realize this is a personal interest of mine, and it's something that helps me cope with the inevitable loss of my dear cats. please don't bring any negativity here okay? ;o; i know this new interest of mine is potentially turning a few people off to me and my art, but it's something i've found a deep connection with and i have no intention of hiding it form the internet.

Btw, I am only a beginner taxidermist, but im pretty sure if you replaced the head she COULD be mountable. The leather may be the only issue. Idk. But my first mount was on a budget and the pelt was at least 20 years old. His pelt was hard, it softened up enough for me to mount but his paws remained stiff.

i do think with a lot of work, she's def mountable. her leather is very soft and bendy, so i think it wouldn't put up much of a fight. i worry that it's too thin though and the fur would slip if she was rehydrated, which would be terrible u_u her paws do seem stiff though.
definitely not bad for a first mount! :'D i've only got a small collection right now, i'm sure i'll start attempting my own taxidermy once i have more to spare xD
i still haven't picked a name yet, for either her or my pigeon ;o; so hard to choose!

I dont see much work having to go into her, but im not that wise on this subject. i mean, a rabbit's skin is really thin. I have a black rabbit pelt, i wonder if it is anything like that? If you anted t mount it, id test a spot to hydrate it and if it slipped, stop. I was afraid of mine falling apart but was fine!

i hoenstly have no idea about this stuff either really. i'm so, SO new x'D i'm sure if i got a professional to tell me i could go through with it one day, but it's pricey so i'll have to wait and see. ;v;

I could mount something if again if i felt like but yea, its nerve racking for a beginner! If you are honestly worried about it, try working on something like a squirrel or something and im sure it will help you! are you gunna try soft mounting or regular mounting? cx If you were like me, you would research it and then just GO FOR IT! I mean, for this fox, im probably spending 40 to mount her. Wire, stuffing, eyes, face form.... its not TOO bad if you soft mount... round 100 for traditional.

i prefer soft mounts right now. i don't have a room big enough to be a good showroom for life size mounts ;o; i am thinking of practicing on skunks and maybe ermines. it's hard to find pelts in mountable quality though, most don't even have any of their legs u_u

i like soft mounts, very cuddly <3 I have a small room o i am in the same situation. I would look at moscow's hide and fur or ebay; look a LOT on dA too. Some good ones out there. I cant afford full taxidermy quality so i get whatever is cheapest for me, and i am lucky arctic foxes have white legs so im able to make some.

thank you! i do love her a lot. she's my first fox pelt. very soft and plush. i love her so much ugh ;; i'm gonna be getting some black rabbit fur soon. excited for it :'D i've also got a raccoon pelt and raccoon tail on the way. as soon as i got some taxidermy, i had to get more x'D
i have no idea. i figure she was hunted/trapped, but i traded for her and didn't buy her from whoever originally obtained her so heck if i know. i just really wanted a pelt and since it was technically free to me, i had no reason to refuse it x'D

oh man do post pictures when you get those racoon bits in :^ D iv'e been wanting to get more pelts for a while but havent had the money o @ aa .. but i have quite a few antlers and skulls n stuff, i even have this cute bottle necklace with tiny snake ribs in it! its precious.. i dont wanna wear it around too much in fear of damaging it tho ;w;
aa thats understandable, i got my small rabbit pelt from a flea market in town my town so i honestly dont know where it came from either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it was fairly cheap too! (but probably because of the indents in the fur, i really wish they didnt put it on display by putting something on top of it ... :V ) since i live in the south there are nearly 20 flea markets in walking distance i s2g , not to mention i live in a fairly "redneck" town so there are a lot of hunters and animal breeders selling their stuff in said flea markets( mostly rabbit breeders, i actually know a couple and aspire to be a rabbit breeder myself! already got two lil buns, just gotta wait till one is old enough to breed <3 ) GOOD LUCK IN EXPANDING YOUR TAXIDERMY COLLECTION BY THE WAY! may many good pelts come to you in future endeavors ᕕ( ՞ ᗜ ՞ )ᕗ

the tail is actually bleached. it looks like a blonde raccoon and it's gonna be so pretty ;__;
luckily the things i got were $20 or less. not too bad compared to some other pelts. ;v;

i've just sort of learned to accept there will always be hunters around, so if i see something i really want from one of them, i probably won't hesitate to buy. but expensive once again, so i guess i'd have to wait and see xD lot of flea markets though wow haha. i've got one like 20ish minutes away. idk if they sell any pelts anywhere though. i live in a farming state though, so i'm a little surprised there aren't more coyote pelts being passed around since they tend to be a pest to the livestock xD
i think my rabbit will have some indents on it too. the person said they used it to store their gem collection on top of. gems aren't usually that heavy though, so idk if it'll be bad. if i ever get a cool skull, i'm gonna use it to display underneath. i'd prefer a cool buck skull, but those seem like they can get kind of expensive xD

omg cool!! some things around here sometimes even go for as little as 10$ |D there are quite a few coyote around here too so sometimes those come up in flea markets ( here is where i got that small snake pendant btw if you're intrested :3c www.etsy.com/shop/SeaShards?re… ) I'd love to be involved in selling/distributing pelts and such or trading some day haha @ v @ i do belive you need some sort of permit for doing that though if im not mistaken.
And i dont really get why some people throw fits over killing animals tbh. If its for meat or for population control then its understandable, might as well make use of the deceased and admire them for years to come by keeping pieces of them around , right ?¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idk it just seems silly to me that people think they can keep every animal in the world alive without some kind of chaos going on. Hell i love animals SO MUCH but im not going to let them ruin the ecosystem just because some people cant stand seeing something dead. nature is nature and we cant stop that. if its one persons nature to kill things for the greater good then so be it uou
I actually have a friend who is trying to get rid of a fairly large buck skull :^ ) its rly cool and i hope it get my hands on it soon, got giant antlers and everything aaa <3 just about any person i talk to around here has some kind of hunter in their family who is just wanting to get rid of some bones or something haha. i know one flea market around here that actually has a whole room dedicated to taxidermy things! its so cool...they had this mega gorgeous ram skull once omg, i wanted it so bad but had no money v.v; I've actually had this lovely idea of making a "windego" type art piece out of several diffrent pelts and bones @ w @ imagine that hanging on a wall... aaa so cool ...

wow these things are all so cool ;v; yeah, if you're goin to be obtaining the pelts via hunting or trapping you need a hunting permit and a fur permit, at least in ohio. the laws are honestly a little confusing xD
yeah man. the best example i can think of is this one town they were forced to overrule hunting of the deer because someone with a lot of money and power didn't like it. over time, the deer population grew so fast that every plant had been eaten and all the deer were emaciated. so basically it looked like a dead zombie deer town. eventually the overturned the ban on hunting and it went back to normal after they removed a large portion of the deer population. just goes to show ya xD
uuuGH JEALOUS. it's a shame i don't have a lot of taxidermy places around. there's one like half an hour away, but it's pretty small and idk what all they have to just buy when you walk in. i think it's mostly a service for hunters to get their kills mounted. NO FUN FOR SHOPPING :'C

haha maybe someday when i get a fur/hunting permit you can buy some stuff off me xD cause i know as soon as i get some more money im going to hunt around some flea markets in town hehe. one time there was a lovely buck skull someone had painted on, they painted space and stars on the skull and the antlers where painted golden @ w @ oh maaann, i want to start using bones for pretty things like that <3 there is just so much more you can do with animal parts besides just hanging them up aaa. i honestly cant even decide what i like better, pelts or bones? they both have amazing qualities, not only do bones look cool but you can do cool paintings or carvings o them >:3c but with fur you can have it around just for aesthetic purpose or you could actually incorporate it into a outfit! tho youd probably get nasty looks e.e

oh gosh that soUNDS SO RADICAL. i actually have a painting i did of a plush buck skull. it would be so cool to get one that was similar and paint it just like the one in my painting so it's like.. in 2D and 3D. man nOW I REALLY HAVE TO GET A BUCK SKULL, THIS IS SUCH A GREAT IDEA.
i'm a real textural person, i really love anything soft and petable, so i guess i usually choose pelts over bones for that reason. bones are way more versatile though, so i totally see why they're so awesome for artsy stuff <3

yess petting pelts is the best, and due to me raising mini rex rabbits, if one passes away ill be sure to keep the pelt u.u mini rex (or just rex rabbits in general) have a mutation in their genes that cause their fur to stick up straight rather than lay down, causing their fur to be super super soft, almost like velvet! aa <3

i saw so many rex rabbits at my local fair. they're so cute ugh ;_; i def wanna track down a rex rabbit pelt at some point. it's so hard to find case skinned rabbits though, it's always just a flat match of fur is a lumpy square shape. i like case skins cause them i can pet every side ;__;

oh man i know what you mean, its far better when you can pet wherever <3 they are precious, i love my two so much, and once the little girlie is old enough theyre gonna breed >:3c i can expect their first breeding to be around august heh. my buck is far more skittish since he is older, and im assuming the people we bought him from where not very nice too him u.u he is especially skittish around dogs though. the little girl is so hyper , but whens she is tired she likes to curl up in my lap <3 aaa

the lil white/brown one is named buttons because on her back she has small brown spots that look like buttons! ~ littering.deviantart.com/art/-… she sorta looks like she is wearing make up too haha
and the more brown/tan one is mango, because when he sits around he looks like a big fat mango :3c
since these are my first rabbits i like to keep them on my bed sometimes @ v @ its so adorable to watch them hop around my bed and explore
i dont like to keep them cramped up in cages all the time.

yeah. i vote hunting is way better than supporting awful slaughterhouses and stuff. or at least using family farms and ranches for your fur/food cause those animals are happy as fuck. but yeah, i want so many pelts man, they're all so beautiful ;_;
there's a lot of deer here as well! farming state as well, so those buggers have got to be hunted or they'll eat everything xD
i don't believe she's mountable. not without a lot of work anyways. she's missing her nose and pawpads and has a number of tiny holes in her face and a bigger hole near one of her armpits. i'm sure if someone was really determined and skilled, they could pull it off with some scraps and some replacement parts, but that would probably be extra expensive. i don't think i have a lot of room for getting mounts done and stored anyways, i gotta move to a bigger house first. i do plan to have a soft mount eventually though. preferably of a silver fox :3c i do think i want to get my pigeon mounted though. they're a lot harder to display as a hide because you can't just hang them up with a nail unless you want to pierce the hide. he looks funny dangling there by his feet xD

My first pelt was a white fox a lot like that one!! I suspect mine is more old though, since its kind of a yellowish color. Its sooooo soft. I have lots of dead things in my room haha it kind of freaks people out sometimes; I have 8 pelts (3 fox, 2 rabbit, 1 skunk, 1 raccoon, 1 mink), 10 or so tails (most are fox), 4 skulls (coyote, fox, raccoon, lynx), 3 pairs of antlers, a tooon of various feathers, a little preserved shark in a jar, a small shark jaw, some shark teeth, and a couple other things lol

I saved him from being throws out of an antique shop. Hes around 150 years old now!
I thought it was a disgusting waste for him to be killed for his fur then discarded because he 'wasnt fashionable' anymore. Poor thing. So I'll keep him forever safe and make sure he didnt die for nothing! <3 (Seeing as back then it really was just slaughter for fashion so poor baby!)
Im desperate for a stuffed Mink or Weasel or Stoat omfg. I just wish it wasnt so dodgy shipping from the US to the UK!
