The persons we are, the persons we have the potential to become, are affected by so many factors over which we have no control.

We can choose our friends, but not our family.

We can choose what we will do with our lives, but not the reactions of others to our dreams.

We can choose those to whom we will listen; we have little control over what they say.

We can choose our future, but not our past.

However, we can control our responses to these uncontrollable factors. We decide if we will allow the bad habits of those we work with or live among to rub off on us. We decide if we will go through hardship, and come out of it without the reward of wisdom. We decide if we will learn the lessons that those who care about us try to teach. We decide if we will allow difficulties in achieving our goals to make us give up. We decide if we will allow empty flattery or the criticism of others to affect us. We decide if we will break out of the mould that society has placed us in, and face the world without our shell, without the baggage of our present and past, without fear.
