Indeed, because then the handler doesn't influence any negative movements, like crabbing, etc. But of course the dog must be going fast enough, which they often don't when off leash haha. They're either gaiting slowly or running like maniacs XD

It's kinda funny, my dogs actually gait nice and easily long distances after they've taken few full speed rounds.
Speed is a bit complicated thing, too. Many judges are paying more attention to it and telling handlers to go slowly because speed actually is often used to cover all the mistakes in the gait that would show in slower speed. This is a common problem here in sighthound rings, dunno if it affects other groups?

Well sighthounds do generally move much faster than other breeds, that's probably why the judges ask to slow them down because they aren't used to the speed perhaps? I have no idea, but I know that my dog doesn't really move when she's just going slowly (she's a Great Dane) and the gait is judged on like, least amount of effort for most amount of area covered. hmm
