Mermaid Fact:
Hygiene has always been more complicated for mermaids than it is for humans. The fishy odor that inevitably results from living in the ocean can often be detrimental to their efforts to attract partners/mates. While this is somewhat mitigated by the sweet smelling compounds and pheromones (which act on the hypothalamus of men's brains) that they naturally produce, their effectiveness varies depending on the water quality where the mermaid lives. Perfumes are impractical because they tend to wash off in water. Bathing is by far the best solution. However this requires clean fresh water, which very few mermaids had access to prior to the 20th century. Today, weekly trips to public bath houses and mermaid specific body wash and shampoos mean that this problem is largely a thing of the past.
