scratch board and metal etching always look so deceivingly easy to do. but it's painstaking because there is no correction i really think this is one of the best i've seen. the subject's mood is wonderfully captured with your redering of lighting/shadows. the pleats in her headscarf and the eyelashes are superb. i also like the larger crosshatching at the top as compared to the bottom half of the piece. it seems to funnel your view directly from top to bottom. the texture of the crosshatching almost looks like a potato sack you know? and it's like she's taking a break from her work and laying on the sack for a nap at least that's what i imagine her doing it really is a beauty.

Very cool thoughts on this one. She very well could be napping after a long morning of work. Thank you so much. Yeah it is very difficult to correct errors...some of my lines and crosshatches get so small and close together that they chip off the fine line of black that is supposed to stay...so frustrating...This actual piece was in a glass frame on my wall, and the frame fell off the wall one day and when the glass broke, it scratched her up a little When I scanned it I filled in the scratches on PS. The original isn't too bad...but it was a heartbreaker...no erasing.

WOw thats really impressive. i like the angle of the head and the way it looks as if she were holding her face up to the sun. I've never seen work from scratchboard before, do you make it or do you buy it?

Scratch board is purchased, but I believe you could make your own or something similar. It is usally a kinda thick paper with a thin layer of powder and then a layer of black ink or sometimes wax on top. You use a special little scratch point instead of a pen nib, and scratch off the black and reveal the white underneath, and sometimes it is like silver or copper or rainbow patterns underneath the wax. Pretty cool stuff, but no erasing. Thanks for the comment and interest.

I'm not really sure what scratch board is...but this is a wonderful piece! I love the shadows and highlights and the position of the face is excellent.

Ps. Is that a portrairt of Erykah Badu? The resemblance is striking.

Thank you...I don't have the reference photo anymore, but it was a very tiny like 1.5" x 1" picture from an art magezine. I have no idea who the woman is, but I don't think it is Eryka Badu, just coincidence.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet. I can't work a scratch board, so I think whoever can make a picture from it is genius. I love the little details, like the position of her head, the slight smile, the almost-closed eyes. Really something special.

Thank you very much. It is kinda fun to work from the negative and add the positive, starting with black and adding the white. The trick I used was sketching the image with white colored pencil and then scratching or stippling over that. It really wasn't very hard, just tedious...thank you so much though...I was pleased with everything except the background above her face....I rushed it and wound up not liking it. Did you see the dog I did too? Same technique.
