Description So, I read Background Pony . by ~shortskirtsxplosions

I had some things I wanted to say here, but they don't really need to be said anymore. This is, after all, the Internet. There's no shortage of commentary here, so I'll just talk about myself. This story wrecked me. It was great, even a masterpiece, until that final twist of the knife. I knew what wouldn't happen, but it didn't prepare me for what did. The end is not bittersweet, it's just bitter. A black taste that lingers. I made the sketch for this about three quarters of the way through the story, when I loved Lyra, and hope still still lived at the end of every chapter, but when it was over, I couldn't find it in me to finish it for days. Even now I don't think it's really worth posting, but I don't want to look at it any more. So consider this a public service announcement to all three of you who'll read this: don't read chapter 20. Maybe you think you have a heart of steel, but you really just, don't, want, to know.

I read this story a long time ago... the second time you read it, it's not as sad - but god, Lyra. I still love the damn mare.

I just finished Background Pony last week...

I'm not sure - despite the tragic ending for Lyra, and the brutal crushing of the reader's hopes, I do think that stark ending does have a point:  Our futures are uncertain, especially in the distant future - with diseases like Alzheimer's so common, our ending may not be that different from Lyra's.

The point of the ending, I believe, is not to crush the viewer so much as to make them realize how much they can be doing right now to live life, touch those around them, and improve the world for others.  This strengthens the emphasis on living in the present and relying on memory only for the experience and knowledge to know what to do in this moment.

I'm so glad I found some fanart of Lyra being happy in that fic.  The ending does tend to crowd out happier memories of all the good things she has done, from giving Rarity a chance to pursue her vision again after her dreams were crushed to reuniting the mayor and her estranged daughter after so many years.  I want to keep this idea from this fanfic, the hope that I can make a lasting difference.

As a side note, it's quite impressive to see how you have improved in a year and a half!

It is ironic that one would want to forget for ignorance is bliss.

Anyhow, I like this little piece of art, as simple as it is. It shows Lyra smiling, which is something you, and all who can write and draw, can allow her to do.

I certainly don't want to forget, and I believe Lyra is wrong for wanting to. Her smile is not an unusual thing, and that is why I think so.

It's simple because I didn't draw Sugarcube corner or any sort of background due to laziness. It kinda works though. A background-less background pony.
