Description Edit: when I get my tablet fixed, I'll be doing a Midnight Fight v3, which will be this one taken past the initial 8 hour mark I was trying to keep this one within - to see how far I can take it. I'll definitely be reading all tips, critiques and suggestions.

This is a revisit of my 2010 image "Midnight Fight" ([link] )

note: This was done before my tablet surface crapped out. I've got one on order though, yaaaay!

The goal was to redraw the image from scratch, and keep it within the same time frame as the original. I limited myself to 8 hours of working time, same as the original, and took it as far as I could in that period.

It was really good to do, and see how far I've come in that time period of two years.

I did change a few elements, the tan dragon lacks allot of the spikes and spines to add more of the visual cues that it may be younger than they one ambushing him.

I moved the moon within the wingspans to make it more unified. I tried moving it around a bunch, but I didn't like it anywhere else.

From the original description:

These are supposed to be two adult male dragons, fighting over rights to mate/dominance. They are not using fire, as that would be using up precious energy reserves they need for breeding.

The red dragon is older, and smaller and rather stiff with age. However his experiences give him a distinct advantage over the larger youth, and his size makes him a harder target to hit. His dark coloration makes it easy for him to hide in the night sky, and ambush the young male, diving down to hopefully scare him off with a startling visual and vocal display.

I see many different things you have improved in your art. The first thing I noticed was composition, placing the dragons closer to the moon really adds to the dramatic feeling. Your over all technique is better even if the styles in the two pictures are different, the painting-ish style in the older picture is kinda messy while this newer one has really higher level of focus. I say well done ^^

Thank you very much!

The moon caused me quite a bit of... consternation. I moved it around several times, and finally opted to pull it into the wings. The wings also helped me cheat a little bit for some more distortion for the moon.

I do enjoy this - particularly how the light from the moon seems to pass through the skin of the dragon to the left. I would say that if they were given some more detail and subdued colors - it would make this very, very dramatic.

Sorry about the brevity of my previous post, Burt. What coloration would you suggest? I'm a little nervous about the red, I feel if I make him less-saturated he'll turn out pink or doo-doo brown.

I'm thinking of taking the tan to more of a buckskin coloration, if I can manage it, and definitely adding some blood-vessels to the wings of both.

Ooooh buck does sound like a good color ! Really though, the palette you're using is fine as it is. The subdued tones similar along the chromatic scale used in tandem to more detail (scales, undulation of the muscles in strained positions) would probably aid it a bit.

I'll have to play with it some more, and tryout your suggestion.

I like the dynamic poses. Not sure about the transparent wings though. i mean sure they're your imagination, but I prefer a more realistic approach with somewhat translucent but not transparent membranes, that also show some veins and irregulatiries.
