Story (819 words) :
End of December | Year 0
After days in quarantine, Oogie had finally been introduced to the rest of the herd, and it didn’t take more than a few minutes to notice that she wasn’t exactly welcome among them. Star in particular recognized the threat the new mare posed to her leadership the second she had laid eyes on her, so she made sure to have the others stay away from the intruder as much as possible. At first, the dark mare had kept her distance, only carefully approaching other members of the herd when Star wasn’t looking and tentatively backing away when the lead mare would step in. She was more than worried that the newcomer would be challenging her place, seeing how intensively she would stare at her from a distance and never lower her eyes even in direct confrontation, but after a few days without any fight, Star allowed herself to lower her guard. Maybe that new mare wasn’t so bad after all. Insolent and creepy, but visibly not threatening. Or so she thought.
A light rain was gently falling from the dark sky on this cool winter morning, and Star felt a chill run down her spine. A warning ? No, it was just cold. Maybe the humans would be here soon with some blankets to keep the herd warm. Wet grass was certainly not her favorite meal but still, she started to peacefully graze near the trees to get a bit of cover from the rain. Another chill, stronger this time. Now, she wasn’t that cold, so the golden mare figured something was definitely wrong. She turned her head around to look at her surroundings, and that’s when she saw her. Oogie was standing right behind her, gaze burning into her eyes and ears pinned back against her neck. Although the two mares were about the same height, at this moment Star felt tiny compared to the impressive dark mare stomping her foot in front of her.
This was it. The challenge. As she felt the rain intensify, Star instantly regretted having let her guard down for she was now at a disadvantage, pinned against a tree with no one around her to help. Knowing she shouldn’t show any fear no matter how intimidated she felt, the lead mare whirled around with her ears pinned to face her opponent, showing her teeth to tell her to back off. But Oogie was having none of it, and didn’t even flinch at this attempt of intimidation. Instead, she stomped her hoof down again, making a show by arching her neck and grinding her teeth. Her tail whipped loudly in the air once, before she stopped moving completely, waiting for an answer. Not knowing what she was capable of, Star figured that Oogie was just as likely to just be showing off as she was to be ready to pounce and tear her throat open. Better not take any chances and call for reinforcement. The lead mare let out a high-pitched screech as she bared her teeth once again, hoping the rest of the herd would come to her rescue. It took her less than a second to look to the side to see if the others were approaching, but it was just enough distraction for Star to not notice that Oogie had taken a step forward, and when her eyes landed back on the challenger only to realize her close proximity, she instinctively took a step back. One step. One mistake. Backing away, admitting weakness and fear, offering victory to her opponent. Star knew it, and so did Oogie.
The dark mare suddenly lunged forward, teeth out and closing her jaw only centimeters away from Star’s neck, as the golden mare jumped to the side to avoid her. Recognizing her defeat, she immediately made her move to walk away but to her surprise, Oogie followed, biting her rump and forcing her to take to canter to flee. But again, Oogie followed. Not just following in fact, she was chasing the golden mare around the pasture, and Star started to seriously fear for her life. Tail between her legs, she had never gallopped so fast in her entire life, with only one thing on her mind : escaping this monster.
After almost an entire lap around the pasture, the dark mare suddenly stopped giving chase and simply stood proudly in the heavy rain with her head high and ears forward, still staring at Star as she kept running for a bit to stay at a safe distance. Eventually, Oogie turned away to walk towards the herd, prancing about and whipping her tail to intimidate whoever would dare to stand up to her.
This hadn’t been just a challenge, it had been a humiliation, and it shook Star to her core. All she could do now was watch from a distance as the new queen was ready to start her brand new reign over the herd...
BREAKING NEWS ! QUEEN OOGIE HAS TAKEN THE THRONE !
Seriously though, poor little Star is not about to forget this challenge anytime soon, or ever really :<
Also, my deepest apology for how shitty this drawing looks compared to the previous one, but I seriously spent too much time on the Monthly Quest and I felt really discouraged with this one so terribly sorry about that :/
