Description Species depicted: Eastern giant eland (Taurotragus derbianus gigas)
Time taken: around 15 minutes per drawing
References used: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeUxbP…
Tools of the trade: Photoshop CS5

A few of the (many) sketches I did to practice drawing Giant elands. Hooved animals in general can be tough for me, but for some reason these guys especially managed to be just not right all the time. Nothing better than lots of sketching to get a feel for their anatomy. These couple were drawn from a video, the link is given above with references.

As their name might suggest Giant elands are the largest of the two eland species, and on top of that the largest antelope in the world. Not to mention they are incredibly beautiful animals as well!

hahaha well I think 'huge antelope' describes them pretty well XD Though I must say that while sketching a striking resemblance to certain cow breeds also became apparent, especially without the horns and markings. So cool you got to see them though, I'd love to meet one some day - be it in the wild or in a zoo.

Ooh, Eland!
Them and Kudu are probably my favorite African antelopes.
Very cool sketches of the male and female details.

Ooh yes I love Kudu as well! In fact I'm quite enamoured with many of the larger African antelopes, Nyala and Bushbucks have to be on my favourites list as well Thanks! It was real interesting to see males and females next to each other in the video, made that huge difference in size and bulk very apparent.

There are just so many cool species. It's hard to pick one favorite.
And it really does. Dimorphism is pretty cool.

Glad to hear they're loved by others as well! And I couldn't agree more, those legs (and also the hooves) can be terribly difficult for me. Thank you for your kind comment

BECAUSE THEY'RE ADORABLE FAT ANTELOPES

Thank you, glad to hear you think so! And great that you're a giant eland fan too. It was so hard for me to get the proportions right, for some reason I never put the legs in the right place, made the belly too small etc. etc. In the end it turned out drawing skeletons helped most of all
