I find it hard to believe you started recently.
I may just be stupid, but I found this *really* hard to understand. I couldn't get the layers to work or anything. Any suggestions?

sorry i was gone for awhile, i was on vacation.
anyway, the set layer as background is not really a real setting, what i do is clean up my scanned image and then place it first on the layers window. I then lock it (lock icon on the layers pane), so it would stay put and not be altered before i add layers on top. the background should be your first layer that other layers will be on top of, or overlap.
I use a different process now to paint in GIMP (used to draw on top of the picture with layers for each section and edited as i went), but its a bit weird.
the new GIMP has a function like lasso+outline highlighter, and it traces the lineart of the original image and cuts it out so(i have to make sure the image is desaturated and dirty spots are cleaned beforehand) i can place just the black outlines on a new layer. Then i can legitimately have a background layer just for the background, and then do a lineart layer that is transparent to the bottom, background layer.

no problem. I've actually refined my method a LOT from back when I posted this, but I haven't had time to make another tutorial yet.

Well, this one's still really helpful. I was just wondering, though...how do you stay in the lines so well? That's my biggest problem with coloring.

i don't stay in the lines at all. i use GIMP's version of the lasso tool to cut out the shape that i need to block in the color. and then i move the outline layer to the top and have it overlap every layer below.

This is a really intriguing tutorial -- I certainly wouldn't have thought of it -- but it would be really nice to see the finished image. Other than that, this is really awesome. I just might try using it sometime. ^^

no, it really is lazy. it's what the amazing artists dish out in their scraps with Painter or Corel and etc... come to think of it, though Photoshop is a lot more detailed and higher in resolutions/options/effects with brushes, GIMP has a nice ability to appear soft and also act as a vector (i haven't worked with it like that yet, but i want to) nicely. It's like Painter- at least to me.
i wanted to do one, so i could see what i did on a normal basis. (i kind of do the coloring in random order, with no steps and many alterations.)
the layout was messy and i realized that i wouldn't have space half-way through doing it- thus, i continued, but it's really just blocked together like legos of different sizes.
as for your friend, i'm glad to help. if you want more info on GIMP (the), check their site and download the program. it's shareware! (which is why i use it.)
