Description Hair Color Tutorial - Part 1 of 3

So I've noticed I've been getting compliments on my hair coloring lately and was asked if I had a tutorial. I didn't, but I now understood why I didn't. They're a pain to make. I have newfound respect for anyone who has to make one--especially if they're the type who's not good at explaining. *guilty*

I tried my best to explain my process, but in the end, it's just showing how I do things. Needless to say, this tutorial is very convoluted because where most tutorials go: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5", I literally go: "1, 3, 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 4, 5". I backtrack a lot, which will most likely confuse most people.

Another problem with this tutorial is that I make the basic assumption that the reader in general knows how to use layers and that they know how to access the eyedropper tool.

And just so you know, I used Corel Painter IX for this.

If you run into confusion, please let me know. I'll try the best I can to explain. x_x

And for those of you who might be curious to the order of the layers I make (each color has its own layer):
- Highlight 4
- Highlight 3
- Shadow 4
- Shadow 3
- Shadow 2 B
- Highlight 2 B
- Highlight 2
- Highlight 1
- Shadow 2
- Shade 2
- Shadow 1 B
- Shadow 1
- Shade 1
- Base

(The layers that have "B" in them just mean the same color of the first.)

~~~
On the bright side, this guy I doodled has suddenly sprung to life for me. The moment I put glasses on him, a name and personality screamed out at me. Henceforth, he is known as "Nanko". (Or affectionately "Nanko-chan".)
I will explain more about him when I finish coloring the rest of him.
How do you color without coloring over your sketch lines?
You use different layers. Just put your coloring layer underneath your sketching layer.
See, the thing is, I can't draw very good line-art to begin with...
Well, like the title suggests, it's for hair coloring only. I'm not sure if I'd be able to explain how I do line-art in the first place. In fact, most of my "line-art" is actually my sketch. I hardly ever clean up my lines, so they're messy. I could probably give a few pointers, but that's about all.
I wasn't asking anything of you, I'm just saying. But pointers would be helpful.
Yeah, I know. I was just saying I didn't have any tutorials per se for lineart. But if you take art classes, the basic rules for drawing are covered. I.E. When you draw the circle for the head, the eyes are always in the middle. People may be tempted to draw them higher because it seems higher on the face, but really, the mass of hair usually covers the top 1/4th of the head.
Though if you really want pointers, I'll make a "pointers" guide next time when I have time. XD; *is swamped with stuff at the moment*
Is this done with tablet?
Yup. Everything (including the sketch) is done on the tablet.
Nooooo...That doesn't work for me then...T.T
Do you use Graphire Version 4?
J-Cleo In reply to Seth-Cypher [2007-07-05 07:16:10 +0000 UTC]
What? What doesn't work? You can still do it with a mouse, though I'm sure it's much harder since you can't do pen pressure (which is where the pencil technique relies heavily on).
The tablet? 3, but it doesn't matter what version your tablet is as long as it works and has pen pressure.
By the way, is that character a reference? Because it looks alot like Jade from TOA.
J-Cleo In reply to Seth-Cypher [2007-07-05 19:22:13 +0000 UTC]
It really isn't. But you're the second person to tell me that. lol. I actually have that game, but haven't played it yet. (I should play ToS first though... which is yet another game I have and not played yet.) The fact is, I first drew him without the glasses and was going to color him in as is, but then I felt something was missing, so I drew in the specs and I thought he was adorable with them. Plus the brown hair was completely on a whim. (After all, originally this character was only for demonstrating my technique.) I chose it because I hadn't really colored anyone with regular brown hair yet.
As for the clothes, I was influenced by two other games I was playing at the time: Yo-jin-bo and Phoenix Wright. Yo-jin-bo had a few characters with these capes on and I've always liked capes, so I wanted to draw one on him, but then his neck looked bare and remembered how awesome Edgeworth looked with his cravat and did something similar with him. That is all.
