Have to be honest, the water starters never appealed to me. I always thought they paled in comparison to your other work, there just isn't really anything dynamic about them. There's so many water types around it's hard to be creative but surely there's something more that could be done here. Especially with the updates to the Grass and Fire starters, obviously it'll never be as awesome as Aggi (duh) but it just feels subpar alongside Combustail.
Incidentally you mentioned how you thought Combusken looked like a digimon but I thought that when I first saw this guy. There's no real animal influence that I can pinpoint and the features all seem jumbled and simply for show, something that is common among Digimon.
Sorry to sound so harsh, I can't say I ever particularly liked this one and now with the updated starters it feels even less unique.
Maybe go back to your original inspiration and see what exactly it was you were trying to get at. More definition will always allow something to be made more clear.

Haha, you should've been around to see the oooooold old water starters I had. They were hideous! These fellows are relatively new compared to the other starters (before the new versions) so I didn't feel they needed any drastic changes. Water starters have always been hard for me to get around, I don't know why, but they never really pop so great. Nonetheless, I like respirath anyway. It's such a little jerkwad and I couldn't imagine it looking any different.
Yeah I didn't even figure out it was based on a chicken until maybe last year.. ooh cockfights, gotta get some good inspiration on that... XP
I can't say there's any more to these ones then there is here. Maybe lack of new perseption makes them feel less special.. they'd probably make people see them better by suggestion through only giving them different poses. XD
That's all fine anyway - I never really liked ALL of the starters in a given generation anyway, so I can't say I expect everyone else to love them all.
I've yet to finish up the Kaezo starters anyway. ;D

Oh I doubt they were THAT bad, and this fella isn;t necessarily bad I just personnally felt he was overshadowed by his compatriots. It looks like it would kick me down a flight of stairs, then steal my wallet, it's got that look about it.
Yeah the whole cockfight thing was picked up by a few people, a pokemon chicken that is part fighting, I'm suprised the RSPCA didn't pick up on it XD
I imagine a new pose of such would give me a different opinion on them entirely, but anything can be made to look fancy so that doesn't suprise me. Aye you can't win 'em all, and you can't please everyone and plenty of people love this guy so I'm simply the awkward minority haha

haha! Well if you think about it, Pokemon has a lot of terribleness about it. People capturing free animals and forcing them to fight one-another in some nationally-traditional bloodsport. O_O
