Description A commission for *Merman1234 .

Comes great sacrifice...

"She was an elf warrior, and the invading human navy would invade the elf kingdom from across the seas. The only way to defeat the humans was to find the trident and use it against the human navy! But she was told of the risk if she held it but she was willing risk it to defeat the humans.
Now transformed, the elf sea-centauress will use the trident against the humans and sink their navy!"

======

This one was challenging... I still feel like I didn't get her lower fish features totally right. The reference I had was from a front view and I just really fail at drawing horses... This made me start drawing animals more though. The main focus was the trident appearing before her and her surprised/determined expression. It was fun playing with all the colors. Used right, cel shading can look amazingly amazing huh!

comes great insanity, but the other thing she should have condΒ‘sidered is that my greed and the one of my fellows is the force that keeps me moving and neither she or the protoss or anyone can stop us i shall conquer their land or see it burn to ashes around me

I quite like your more dynamic pieces like this one. Looking at it just makes me think of the story behind the picture

This is so beautiful! And I love how her hair looks, especially since it's doing funky things from being underwater. XD
The trident and the lighting around it also looks amazing, and the overall framing/shape of the piece is simply lovely.

looks amazing though her lower body seems a bit strange/interesting. I can tell if those are her legs or an extra set of arm-like appendages.

i guess the problem with her lower body is in the "legs". they remind more of human legs than horse's ones. you have to work on the joints and muscles 'cause right now she looks like a sea creature with unnatural short legs and a tail :<

just the other day I was thinking about how you havent submitted anything in a while... and WOW!! this hardly looks cell shaded! despite the imperfections on the lower legs, I love everything about this picture, the lineart feels dynamic, the colors are bright and the lighting is pef=rfect, and the framed compositions you're trying out for your commissions look really stylish!

gah, do I sound too obsessed? I'm sorry T___T

this is an awesome drawing.. the only thing is the legs look a bit strange on it.. like they shouldnt be there.. lol, its cool 'cause its more unique and I have NOTHING negative to say about the coloring or linework, 10000 times better than what I could accomplish right now..

Merman1234 [2011-05-09 04:51:32 +0000 UTC]

That is amazing. What captured my attention was the power of the trident's "lightening" magic being reflected on the sea elf's upper body and lower half of the fish body, with shadows being cast as well. I like the way she is reaching out for the trident and the trident already casting its spell upon her, love the look on her face as well, she seems unsure what will happen...but it has already happened!
Love the concept you came up with for the design of her lower body and upper body.
I like how her hair almost seems to be moving in the picure.
Love the background with the coral and bit of sealife as well, I like how you seemed to frame the picture too with the coral, the water, and bubbles
You have my thumbs up approval!

Thanks!

I thought about that after putting them on her! They DO have teeth don't they! GUH!

XD; but this is the edited for dA version. I didn't want to have to put a mature tag just cause her nips were out*

...Maybe the starfish are... dead and just being used for decoration?

Just put up a mature version and a censored version on dA. It'll work.

To be honest, her bottom half looks either too small (the legs) or enourmously exaggerated (the tail). The leg part might be due to the transformation (don't relly need legs if she's going to stay underwater) but the tail is just way too over proportioned. If she'd be real something like 1/3 of her bodyweight would be in just the base of the tail with it being that thick.
Her top half, on the other hand, looks great and the use of light and colour is just phenomenal.
I really like the overall shape of the image as well, very appealing

Thanks for the comments ^^!

I actually think it's a bit too small too. My goal was a bit of a perspective, lol, which fell flat... But the bigger I made her fish half the more unbalanced she looked to me >__>;. Hahaha, despite doing fantasy art I still catch myself getting rooted in the "if this was real" issue. It took me a long time to wrap my head around the horse legs attached to the tail. If she can move freely and easily through the water... She would be really heavy... but then again whales are... Well no they're... UNGH XD! See how complex it is? This makes me want to play with more unusual character designs now though :3.

I get the complexity issue, believe me.
As for working with more unusual character designs, I say work for it
