I've been so inspired by the artwork of Beksinski lately. What a painter! If you know his work then you'll see his influence.Here's another try at Castle Grayskull from "Masters of the Universe". I'm having so much fun doing these.

I like this take on Castle Grayskull, it has a certain epic fantasy Lord of the Rings kind of vibe to it, but with a sort of dark twist that is rather interesting. The sense of massive scale is depicted well here, also! Truly magnificent work. A definite fave!

Even as a child, I preferred the darker aspects of Eternia, such as Castle Grayskull, the dragon Granamyr who never lost his menace despite being stuck in an '80s cartoon, the many tragic one-shot characters,and the frequent appearance of ruins and lost civilizations. One had the impression that Eternia was a dying world with a horrific past that it was somehow recovering from. The popular fan-speculation where I lived was that the Sorceress was trapped in Castle Grayskull as penance for having once been a horrific villainess who was partially responsible for the failed genocide that resulted in such a meager population of humans and sapient non-humans in Eternia, and that her sponsorship of both He-Man and later She-Ra was part of her efforts to make up for her past crimes. (I do not recall if there was ever an official backstory given to the Sorceress in the cartoons or the comic books.)
All that made He-Man's sunny optimism admirable by contrast -- which kept him from appearing to be just one more generic '80s child-friendly do-gooder.
It also made Skeletor's incompetence seem to stem less from his being in an '80s cartoon and more from his being the last failed member of a diminishing lineage of villainy, the inept wanna-be villain who had to realize on some level that all the really effective Evil Magic and Evil Artifacts had been used up long before he was born and all he was left with were comedically wan left-overs of evil power.

This is what Castle Grayskull is all about! Mystery, creepines and overwhelming sense of its power and secrets... Statues are nice touch. Simply perfect!

Now THAT is Castle Grayskull - ominous, ancient and frickin' huge! I don't really even miss the fangs on the skull because of how well the fully human skull actually works and evokes the question if it's a sculpture or an actual skull of an impossibly large giant.
