Photoshop, about 10 hours.

I totally fell in love with Coran from Baldurs Gate. Athletic, charismatic, thief. ^^ His portrait looks awful though... First of all: he is an elf. And the original portrait is about as elfish as Hutt's slimy bottom. Secondly, from my point of view he is supposed to be a little bit of a 'prince charming'. (Especially when I added the NPC project modd *grin*) I wanted him to look a bit nice&noughty. Finally, I added a bit of purple light to make it resemble the original a bit more.

Coran >>>>> Xan.

However, Xan's original portrait >>>>>> Coran's.

I shall be stealing this and putting it into my game so that I can go *squee* every time he talks to me. Coran's much more romantic than Xan. Much more. I loves him. And now I can love his portrait.

Very good work. Snarky expression on his face.

I see it's been quite a while since you posted this, but I just have to tell you how happy this picture makes me!

I'd never given Coran much thought before, but the BG1 NPC project is turning me into a fan. But, I had to do something about his scary portrait! I feel so lucky to have found your picture.

I've re-sized it and added it to my TuTu game, and I'm so pleased with it. Looks right at home next to the other originals, if you ask me. Yay for handsome Coran!

Thank you!

Can you please tell me how to exchange the portraits in BG tutu? The Tutu mod is a great piece of work. I've played through it several times.

Do you put the portrait in the override or how do you do it? =/

NyxElfheart In reply to nattzvart [2008-05-17 15:28:45 +0000 UTC]

I use Shadowkeeper, it's a save game editor that let's you change any character's portrait (among other things). You can download it here: [link]
I think I had to put the new portrait in the portrait folder to get it to show up as an option when I ran Shadowkeeper.

If you have any trouble using it, note me and I'll try to help you out.

thank you! Coran is a lovely character. Oh, how I laughed at the baby-sitting quest, when Coran had to look after one of his bastard child for a week. That was great fun.

hey, you don't happen to know how to include my own portrait for the BG NPC's? Btw, are you playing BG1 with the tutu-mod? If not, I warmly recommend it.

I happen to play BGII. I haven't in a LONG time though. I used to love it, so I'm gonna try it out again. I have a book with all of the info on it too. Cheats and stuff. Of course I never use them...>.>
I've never actually played the first version.

nattzvart In reply to Freaky-Darling [2007-09-20 13:24:20 +0000 UTC]

okay, well I favour BG2 as well. Irenicus is one of the visual game's history's coolest villians. ^^

Bg1 is a bit tricky to play when you're used to the sequel, but I reccomend you try on BG1 using the Tutu mod. It converts whole BG1 (with expansion) to the BG2 engine. This includes all rules, spells ect.
The downside is that if you wanna mod BGtutu you have to use Tutu-mods *only*. If you install Tutu on top of other BG1 mods, the game will crash when you leas expect it. =/

Some really great work. Congrats. Coran *is* wayy too ugly to be the ladies' man after all. You can imagine the writers @ Bioware were being kinda sarcastic.

Have you found out how to replace the original portrait with this one? If not, let me know and I'll post here a quick tutorial. It's easier than it seems.

Congrats again.

I'm sorry, I accidentally hit the send button and I'm not sure of how to edit or erase the comment above. I'm kinda new to DA... heh

Anyway, there's this folder in your Tutu installation directory called OVERRIDE. If you want to replace any portrait in game, all you have to do is place the version of the portrait you want to use in that folder, and the game engine will use that one instead of the original, without replacing or corrupting any files in your game.

1) Save two BMP (24-bit) copies of your portrait. One should be 110 width x 170 height and it should be named _ORANL.bmp. The small one is 38x60, name it _ORANS.bmp.

2) Copy those files into the OVERRIDE folder that's inside your Tutu installation folder.

3) Ta-da, load your game and Coran's portrait will be replaced. If he's already in your party, you should see the changes immediatly.

Have fun, hope that works and congrats again for the great image. Take care

kilivitz In reply to nattzvart [2007-03-05 12:15:45 +0000 UTC]

The method to replace them is pretty much the same in BG1 and BG2 (or Tutu for that matter, ). Here's what you should do:

There's this folder in your Tutu install directory called OVERRIDE

wicked colouring. youve really brought out his attitude in this. hmmm i dunno about BG1 but in 2 there was an option in the portrait seleciton for that. handy information isnt it?

Nope, no such option in BG2... But there are mods that enhanches the NPC portraits so somehow you should be able to change it. Dunno how, though.

I havent got the slightest idea. ^^
But since the color theme for the character is purple/black/green I figure that's why. You can check out the NPC walkthrough at Gamebanshee if you are RELLY curious, haha.
Thank you so much!

InverseReality-2 [2006-09-16 04:31:03 +0000 UTC]

There should be a picture folder where the little portraits are kept. Don't remember whether BG 1 is the same as BG2, though. If it here, this should be the location (going off memory):

Program Files-->Black Isle-->Baldur's Gate(or BG?)-->ortraits

I believe the formats are w:110xh:170 and w:38xh:60, in 24-bit .BMP format. You have to save filenames as "L.nmp" for the large one that displays for the character bio, and "S.bmp" for the small portrait that shows up in the game screen for party members. Then, you go into the same and choose custom portraits.

Er, goodluck!

InverseReality-2 In reply to InverseReality-2 [2006-09-16 04:32:51 +0000 UTC]

Deviant art turned my directions into smilies. Dubba-u-tee-eff, man. Anyway, there should be a Portraits folder under your BG 1 folder where you stick the custom portraits.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nattzvart In reply to InverseReality-2 [2006-09-16 12:18:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but you cant change the NPC's portrait from there... I think. Or can you? I thought that directory was onlu ment for additional PC portraits. (?)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InverseReality-2 In reply to nattzvart [2006-09-16 23:52:14 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sorry. I misread the quest... such an idiot.

Here's a link to The Gibberlings Three , who have a mod pack for changing the portraits. It's a lead to where/how you will be able to alter NPC portraits. The Baldur's Goth project @ Spellhold Studios seems to have a mod to allowing portraits in the Portraits folder to be used for NPCs as well... I think the only way to know is probably o just download the mods and check out the readme. Pocket Plane Group is another modding community you may want to check out. If nothing else, all of these guys have users forums where someone will be able to answer your question. (You've probably visited down this route, but just thought I'd mention in case you hadn't.)

you should give it a go! It is very much the same kind of game as Kotor1 and 2, except that it's not full 3d. ^^ But very nice roleplay, and also uses the d20 system - same as i Kotor.
you should install the Tutu mod for BG1, since that allows you to play the game with the BG2 engine! (and other enhancements such as more classes, weapon types, spells ect) Also install the NPC project wish allowes form more Kotor-style interactions and conversations. (such as player-initiated dialogue, and more talking from the NPC of your party ^^)
Oh, thats a long answer! (Can't help it, alongside Kotor, the BG series is my fav game in world history )
